We recently connected with Red as the Sun Band and have shared our conversation below.
Red as the Sun, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Around the beginning of 2019 things weren’t working out with our singer and we ended up parting ways. Now we were on the hunt for a replacement and our bassist (Kelly Grant) mentioned that he knew a singer through a friend. He thought this guy (Scott Mudgett) might fit perfectly in our band. Scott was our age range, looks the part, and that we had to check out his vocals. We had gotten a link to some of his recordings and after listening we immediately thought “This is our guy!” After we recruited Scott we started practicing on a weekly basis as our goal was to get show ready and start playing out. We also wanted to get our material recorded. We diligently worked on our material 2-3 hrs per week to get ready to play a show near the end of 2019. Just as we were going to book a gig, tragedy struck. Our singer (Scott) was diagnosed with a benign tumor behind his eye. Another devastating blow came as the start of the COVID-19 pandemic shut everything down. Everything we were working so hard for came to a screeching halt! We were devastated but we continued to practice in person when Scott was feeling ok until the infection rate got so bad that we had to cease in-person practice. Some time went by and we were all feeling the itch to practice again. How was that possible with everything on lockdown? We scoured the internet looking for an alternative to in-person practice. We ended up finding a program called “Jamkazam”, which allowed us to practice together online in real time. We used “Jamkazam” on a weekly basis until it caught so much popularity that hit started to lag and cause us a lot of problems. So, practice was shut down for a few good months. During this time we just practiced on our own and began to write some new music individually. We also knew that we had enough material for an EP and wanted to get into a studio when the COVID-19 restrictions started lifting. We met a guy through Facebook named (Brennan), who was a local San Diego musician and a recording engineer and he had a house and turned his one car garage into a full fledged studio. He has a separate mixing room, a full drum kit, a fully enclosed vocal booth, and even a half-bathroom. We waited a few months for the pandemic to loosen its grip, but that never happened, so we decided that we would go into the studio anyway and record a four track original EP. It took about three to four sessions to get everything laid down with “Scott” nailing the vocals in one day on the first take. We were all pumped as we had recorded our first EP as “Red as the Sun”, and achieved a giant milestone for the band. We currently have about 15 originals ready to go! Our future plan is to play more live shows and get into the studio again to lay down some more original tracks. Check us out at www.RedastheSun.com

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Our band is unique in the sense that our style of music is rock but a combination of sounds which makes it difficult to say “you guys sound like … band”. Jason has a metal background, George has 70’s punk, Kelly listens to everything and Scott is multi-influenced. We bring an older sound and modify it to modern times.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
We would probably say that bring four people together and sharing our story through our instruments. The is a hidden vibe in the air that is created when this all flows together.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One of our goals is to get our original music recorded and forever preserved in history. We are also enjoying playing together and having a lot of fun!
