We recently connected with Rebeca and have shared our conversation below.
Rebeca, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about how you got your first non-friend, non-family client. Paint the picture for us so we can feel the same excitement you felt on that day.
Back in 2019, I was working as a barista at a coffee shop in El Segundo.
There was a regular customer that would come in every week at least once, sometimes more.
She ended up seeing my art through instagram after I was tagged in a post that the coffee shop made.
She followed my art account and next time she came in, she couldn’t wait to talk to me about my art.
She actually ended up wanting to buy a drawing right out of my sketchbook! It was the most satisfying $20 I ever made.
I was so taken aback but in the best way!
In my head, I was posting my art but never expecting anyone to really see it, let alone purchase it.
She was a wardrobe stylist and asked if I would be willing to design a logo for her styling business. I was commissioned by her for $250 to do it, and she still has that logo to this day.
As you can imagine, I was completely shocked and flattered.
It was the first time I really believed that I could do something with my art.
It meant a lot to me that someone would go out of their way to not only let me know how much they liked what I was doing, but also liked it enough to pay me for it.
I thought to myself, “If this is what happens when I’m not actively promoting myself, imagine what I could accomplish if I did!”

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Rebeca Fernandez and I am a Los Angeles based freelance multimedia artist.
I focus on themes of femininity, beauty, and all thing whimsical in my work!
I strive to create a world that is colorful, fanciful, and playful through different mediums although watercolors will always be my weapon of choice.
I mainly focus on personal work, selling prints, and commissions.
Growing up I always loved making art, doodling in class, entering art competitions, filling my sketchbooks.
But it wasn’t until I was an adult that I really realized that I was an artist.
I think we’ve all been there. The self doubt, the pesky little voices in our heads telling us we’re not the real deal.
I was able to push through that and really hone in my craft over the past few years.
My motto has been, “Do it even though you’re scared.”
That motto has lead me to so many exciting new opportunities this year alone.
I have made so many amazing connections, been a part of multiple art shows, did my first video interview and now my first art market. All these things I would have never experienced if I let the fear overcome me.
So to anyone out there that might be feeling the same, just do it! It won’t be that scary, I promise.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I get really excited any time someone just genuinely likes the art that I make. It sounds simple but really that is what motivates me to keep going. The thought that someone out there could relate to or resonate with something that I created. I find that truly fulfilling.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Honestly I think I would have to say social media.
I’ve actually been able to connect with a lot of people through Instagram primarily. For example someone who follows me reposts my art to their story, and their friend sees it and does the same. The reach goes farther and lands on someone’s page that sees it and ends up wanting to buy a print, commission me, or invite me to their art market. So it really is such a useful tool, even if you feel like you aren’t getting much traction! You never know who will end up seeing your page and reaching out!
