Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Reasa Selph. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Reasa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
One of the most unexpected and defining challenges of my professional career had nothing to do with marketing. It had everything to do with my son.
In December 2023, we took him to the ER, he was 11 years old, and something was clearly wrong. We trusted the system. We were told he was fine and sent home. Within 48 hours, he was in septic shock. We spent 34 days in the hospital, and we are still navigating the road to recovery.
What followed wasn’t just a medical crisis. It was a complete shift in how I operate as a business owner, a mother, and now an advocate.
At the time, I was running a growing agency with a large client base. There was no pause button. I had a team depending on me and clients depending on us while my son was fighting for his life from something that should have been caught.
The unexpected problem wasn’t just the situation itself. It was realizing how broken systems can be when you need them most, and how quickly you are forced to become an expert in things you never asked to understand.
I handled it not perfectly, but intentionally.
I leaned into structure. I built systems that allowed my team to step up while I focused where I was needed most at the hospital, in medical records, and in conversations no parent ever expects to have. At the same time, I refused to let emotion replace clarity. We documented everything. We asked hard questions. We held people accountable. We are still doing that today.
What I’m most proud of is that we didn’t choose between fighting for our son and showing up for our clients. We found a way to do both with integrity.
That experience changed how I lead. It made me sharper, more direct, and far less tolerant of surface-level solutions in healthcare or in business.
Because whether you are serving a patient or a client, people are trusting you with something that matters. That is not a responsibility you get to take lightly.

Reasa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m the founder of Selph Marketing, a woman-owned marketing agency based in Texas that helps small businesses grow through strategy, visibility, and consistency.
My background is in operations, not marketing and that distinction matters. I don’t just ask what will look good. I ask what will actually work, scale, and drive results. I founded Selph Marketing in 2020, and what started out of necessity has grown into an agency serving a diverse client base across multiple industries.
We specialize in SEO, content strategy, digital advertising, and brand development. But more importantly, we solve a real problem. Most small businesses are either overwhelmed by marketing or have been burned by agencies that overpromise and underdeliver, sold tactics without strategy, left wondering why nothing is working. That’s where we come in.
We build marketing systems that are sustainable and measurable, connecting everything from Google visibility and content to social media, email, and community engagement into something that actually drives revenue. Anyone can post on social media. Anyone can run an ad. Very few know how to connect all of those pieces into a cohesive strategy.
Community is also core to how we think about growth. We encourage clients to show up locally, build real relationships, and be known beyond their feed. Visibility isn’t just digital it’s who knows you, trusts you, and talks about you when you’re not in the room.
Many of our clients have been with us for years. We become a true extension of their team, deeply involved in their business, not just their marketing.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the agency’s growth it’s how we’ve built it. Through challenges both personal and professional, we’ve stayed consistent in how we show up, communicate, and deliver.
Our job is simple: help good businesses get seen, get chosen, and grow. We just take that responsibility very seriously because behind every business is a person trusting us with something that matters.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been one that most people do not expect: staying true to who we are and how we operate.
Early on, it is tempting to say yes to everything and everyone. More clients feels like growth. But in reality, not every client is the right fit, and not every opportunity is worth taking. One of the biggest shifts in our business came when we stopped focusing on quantity and started focusing on quality.
We got very clear on what we are good at and where we deliver the most value. We leaned into that and stopped stretching ourselves thin trying to be everything to everyone. That clarity not only improved our results, it attracted the right clients.
Knowing your value is a big part of that. When you understand what you bring to the table, you stop negotiating against yourself. You also become more confident in who you work with and how you work with them. We do not try to be everything to everyone. We are exceptionally good at what we do, and we lead with that.
We are selective with our clients, and that has been one of the most important growth decisions we have made. The right clients trust the process, respect the strategy, and are willing to invest in doing things the right way. That creates better outcomes for everyone.
Growth is not just about adding more clients. It is about building a client base that aligns with your strengths, your standards, and your vision. When you do that, the business becomes more sustainable, more profitable, and far more rewarding.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience, for me, was not built in one moment. If I am being honest, it has been tested more than once. It was built in the decision to start over when things did not go according to plan.
In 2020, like many others, I found myself at a crossroads. I had spent years in operations, building systems and helping businesses run efficiently, but I suddenly had to rethink everything. There was uncertainty, pressure, and no clear roadmap. At the same time, I had people depending on me, so I had to move forward whether I felt ready or not.
Starting Selph Marketing was not some perfectly planned leap. It was a decision made out of necessity, followed by a lot of figuring it out in real time.
In the early days, resilience looked like long hours, learning new skills quickly, and taking on responsibility that I had never carried before. It meant showing up for clients while still building the foundation of the business behind the scenes. It also meant pushing through self doubt and the constant question of whether I was making the right moves.
As my business grew, I also found myself publicly advocating for my son and seeking accountability in a situation that became highly visible in our community. That brought a different kind of pressure and required a level of focus and discipline that I had not experienced before.
What I learned through all of it is that resilience is less about pushing through and more about staying consistent. It is about making the next right decision, even when you do not have all the answers.
Over time, that consistency turned into confidence. The business grew. The client base grew. The team grew. But more importantly, I grew as a leader.
Now, when challenges come up, and they always do, I approach them differently. I do not look for perfect conditions. I look for the next step forward.
Resilience is not about avoiding hard moments. It is about learning how to move through them with clarity, discipline, and a strong sense of who you are.
