We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Raynetta a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Raynetta, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
My recent fashion show I did in April 2025 was the Let Them Eat Cake Fashion Show. The original idea of the show was to blend the worlds of The Black Panther Party, the Marie Antoinette era, and African war themes to further discuss the elements of revolution and what it takes to successfully accomplish one. It takes people- and not just any kind of people, but people who are down to have fun and aren’t embarrassed to care. I personally believe that revolutions should be like parties, and that’s where the aspect of clowns and birthday parties came in, creating the taglines “A Celebration For A Revolution” and “Are You Down To Clown?”
With the show, I wanted to use these themes to not just highlight history, but also discuss Astrology. We are currently in the Age of Aquarius, which is currently transiting Pluto, which is a further out planet that affects society as a whole. We were previously in the Age of Capricorn, which dealt with the themes of hard work, money, affluence, and status. Since about 2009, we as a society have been experiencing things like social media influencing, the rise of capitalism, the importance of money, and who has it, at the forefront. Now with Aquarius coming in, it is more about innovation, intellect, the soul, the quirky and weird, and most of all, revolution. The last time we experienced the Age of Aquarius the Haitian, French, and American Revolutions all took place at the same time.
So what I wanted to do with Let Them Eat Cake was revolutionize fashion by bringing back the weird, fun, and quirky to the runway. In recent times of the clean girl aesthetic, office looks, and nude palettes, I feared that we were falling into times of conformity and playing it safe and I truly wanted to break through that. Most of all, as an artist, it is important to me that my black audience has the opportunity to see themselves in Utopias that encourage black imagination. With painted clown faces, colored afro wigs, and avant-garde fashions, everyone apart of the show was willing to push the boundaries to send that message.
When it came to executing, that was my main goal. Let the show be complete and from the heart. I first started by writing down all the goals that would need to be accomplished from the beginning to the end. From moodboarding, to casting, to meetings, promo, to venue, to set design, to day of show. From then I listed every step it would take to accomplish each goal. By doing this, I set out to go, and all I had to do was check off the things on my list. I started ideating in late 2024, and the show was completed on April 27th, 2025.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I’m Raynetta Nah, or Ray, Mulahontaas, reauxs (rose), or Missta DJ. I am a multidisciplinary artist from Philadelphia and traditionally Liberian. I currently go to North Carolina A&T State University, and I study Marketing. I currently work as a freelance Creative Director and DJ with some modeling on the side. I like to call the type of work I like to do “Intellectual Community Service.” Through my work, I hope to make a change in the world and leave a stamp on the psyche of those who interact with my work. I don’t necessarily like to explain my work I like for my audience to come up with their own interpretations of what they see, feel, and experience.
I always knew as a kid I wanted to be a creative. Whether it was singing, dancing, or poetry, I always had a deep resonance and passion when it came to art. When I came to college, I was immediately anonymously introduced to College Daze, and a year later, I was doing their campaigns and doing record metrics. That same year, I found my love of DJing, and with my friend Mercy (Dj Kru Jue), we spent any free time we could find to get DJ lessons from our good friend and talented creative Khursten or DJ Lean. During my sophomore year, I found myself constantly creating fashion shows, projects, and working with my community.
Being at North Carolina A&T State University has truly given me inspiration and community to create whatever I desire and say whatever I feel is necessary. Whether it was through soundscapes or visual artistry, I am so grateful I’ve had this playground to build my creative foundation.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
As a Creative Director, the tone you set is so important. If you want your team to care, you have to care. If you want to feel respected by your team, you have to give that respect. If you want your team to trust your vision, you have to trust their ability to execute. The language that I use, the references I make, all tie in to whatever I planned to get executed. So over the years, I’ve had to take my mad scientist brain and be able to translate whatever I’m seeing in my mind to my team clearly and seamlessly every time.
Sticking to deadlines and keeping promises has been a big part of keeping people together for the ride. Finally, the most important thing has been learning not to take anything personally, no matter what. It’s still hard because as an artist everything is very personal but it order to grow, I’ve had to learn to grow and evolve from challenge and setbacks within teams.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding part of being an artist is people coming up to me telling me my work inspired them as artists, or they simply just felt something from a piece I made. That’s all I want. I just want to impact the minds of people and awaken something dormant in their souls.
