We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ray Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ray, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I was in the seventh grade when I was approached my one of my teachers to ask if my Dad was available to DJ for a school event (our annual “Sock Hop” dance) and I told her that I can DJ also. At first she didn’t believe me because of how young I was until my Dad confirmed it later that day. After that I was booked for my very first professional gig as a DJ at 12 years old!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was brought into the industry through my father who was a longtime DJ back in the Chicagoland area. From the first time I saw him spin those records to get the party going I was hooked! I have been in this industry since 1994 and had been able to see so many transitions within music and the DJ community.
One thing that I take pride in is listening to my audience and reading every room I have the privilege of DJing in. Putting myself in my client’s shoes allows me to have a better understanding of the type of vibe my client desires and prepare for each event.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn that every client is the same because they are not.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I started off working small events and just asking DJs if I can fill in for a few songs. Not only I was showcasing my skills but I was practicing my craft.
