Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rasheeta Joy Fields. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Rasheeta Joy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
There’s a point in life where you realize that your parents did the best they could. I realized this around age 30, where I stopped blaming my parents for all the things I “missed out” on in my childhood and understood that parents did the best they could and they tried to be better than their parents. Once I realized this my perspective changed and I saw what my parents did right.
My mother and father met in Los Angeles, California both with the dream of working as actors. Hoping to make it big on the TV screen. My parents separated when I was 8 years old so I was able to see what they did right separately as individuals.
I saw my mother dream big! Her name was Faith, she passed away in 2012. She dreamt of renting apartments, owning restaurants, creating beauty salons, and selling products. I saw this every day of my life. My mother taught me how to be an entrepreneur and how to take chances. She executed all these businesses some better than others but she attempted all of them. She appeared to be fearless with her investments although now I’m sure she was terrified with two children and as a single parent. She was courageous.
Mother Faith was diagnosed with colon cancer and I saw her change her behaviors and habits with eating. She taught me so much about veganism and food, how stress can cause illness in the body. If my mother did anything right she taught me how to change my lifestyle to avoid the illnesses that were in our family history. Today I use the same teachings and use them to help hundreds of women. I went to school and studied plant based nutrition and exercise science. My mother has left the biggest legacy she could through teaching me her life lessons.
My father was a dreamer as well, and since my parents separated early in my life it took me a little longer to see what my father did right. Over this past year I was able to spend the most time with my father than I ever have and I learned that my father is FUN! I’ve always enjoyed dancing, and making fun turns out I get that from my father. I’ve made hundreds of TikTok videos, dancing and teaching a form of edutainment. Turns out I get this from my parents, I am an example of what my parents did right.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I became a personal trainer because I read a study by the American Cancer Society recommending 75-150 minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week and how that could reduce the chances of certain cancers by 40-50%. That was HUGE! My mother passed away from colon cancer, and both my grandparents died from cancer. This was the motivation to become a certified personal trainer. I served 5 years in the US Navy as an aircraft data analyst and continues my career in corporate America as an engineer after college. In 2016 I was laid off my job as a quality engineer in the oil and gas industry that I enjoyed. I decided that I would start my business as a personal trainer sharing what I learned about fitness and how people can live longer. As I started spreading the word about fitness I had to tell my clients about the whole food plant based lifestyle I had adopted and how this also can help us live a long fulling life.
Today I help women transition to living fully whole food plant based and create the health and body they desire. I provide a step my step process that helps women change their eating habits. I teach how foods like sugar, dairy, and gluten can cause hormonal imbalances and theses are the foods that cause painful periods, fibroids, cysts, endometriosis and many uterine illnesses. Every month I lead groups of women in through these plant based nutrition lessons.
I am most proud of the hundreds of women that have transitioned to eating whole food plant based through my program. When my clients have weight loss success that results in lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, or shrunken fibroids and cry every time. This is my legacy to help women learn what foods serves them and what foods are not.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I believe we all had to pivot in 2020 during covid. Fitness professionals like many others suffered with the cities closing. I was fortunate to be able to pivot to an online fitness and nutrition business. I had a deep desire to help women in a more impactful way and fitness wasn’t the only answer to helping women live longer. During the pandemic I was able to help more women change their eating habits. I was able to focus more on plant based nutrition. I created a virtual program and community of amazing women to support each other while unlearning habits and traditions that were to serve us while learning new habits and creating healthy traditions to teach to our children especially our daughters.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
In 2020 my business boomed! The growth was exponential on my social media platforms and my group programs were full. I would credit this to consistency and collaboration. Posting regularly on social media with a strategy played a huge role in my success. I also had the privilege to collaborate with podcast, and other influencers. I said yes to every opportunity I had to collaborate.
