We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rahmir Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rahmir, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
I have experienced a lot of failure in my short time of getting my business started. One of my most memorable one was booking a studio secession with a client and than having than fake out on the secession after I had already put the money down for studio leaving me to lost money. I quickly learned from that and put in place a non refundable deposit to ensure that I still get some money for my time and protect myself from situations like that. Another time I failed was very early on in my business when I took on a project that at moment in time out of my skill range. I thought I could make up for the skill difference or requires with last minute YouTube videos and tutorials but my lack of experience showed up in project and it lower the quality of work that I did and lend to some issues with that client. From that I learned to make sure to really practice and do your best to master your craft so that your truly able to do anything a client request of you .

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I got into the photography and videography industry starting back my last year in high school . I got interested in it at first because of some scenic photography I was doing and I was also in a video and film class which really sparked a fire and passion for it in me. From them on out I have been deeply involved and invested in what I do and have been striving to improve my brand and improve the quality of work that I put out. Right now I currently offer multiple forms of photography ranging from headshots, to birthday ,and event and I also do BTS for movie and film projects . With my videography I shoot wedding and BTS clicks and videos. From everything I accomplished so far I would say the thing I’m most proud of is the looks of my clients faces when they see my pictures, the instant smile they get on there faces is a reminder to myself that I’m doing a great job and getting better. I love seeing my work become profile and cover pictures and I really want my future clients to know that I’m dedicated to helping there visions come to life and I’m willing to work to help what they image become reality.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In my journey there been plenty of moments of hardship and adversity that I had to overcome to keep my business going and growing. The most recent was a battle of just me rediscovering my passion for what I did. I had hit rock bottom from a creative perspective and I had a ton of personal issues that were just eating away from me. And I wanted to quit so badly but as soon as that happen I got a gig. I took it for the money if I’m being honest but that one little gig reminded me of why I love doing what I do . It got me back on track in so many ways and lifted my spirits and I been thriving ever since.

Have you ever had to pivot?
There’s been many times in which I had to pivot and change course in my life. The time comes to mind most recently was when I had to pivot and decide whether or not to fully commit to my business or to just keep it as a hobby . It was an hard choice only because I didn’t know what I had to do to establish myself and get my business up and running but ultimately it was a decision I’m happy I made. It has pushed me to invest in my craft more and to look and try different things so that I can help my business grow and thrive . It’s hard sometimes and I deal with a lot of issues but it’s also invigorating and exciting. Especially because of the feeling I get when I get in the zone and I know that every picture and video i take is coming out amazing.
