We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rachel Tate-Study. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rachel below.
Hi Rachel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
With over 30yrs in the beauty business there has been so many success stories. I have two that stay very vivid in my mind because both were experiences that I will personally never forget. Both of these have to do with permanent Brows. The first one was a older lady that came in and she had been to another artist and oh boy what a mess. She had one brow that was almost inch higher than the other and one came almost to center of her nose. She was in tears and I really wasn’t sure if I would be able to help her, but with lots of patience and a lot of appointments we fixed her up. She cried, hugged and thanked me!! 20yrs later she still comes in to have them refreshed. The second one was much younger mom/wife she had a disorder where she would pull her brows out leaving no hair. She told me that she had never went swimming with her children or husband in fear that her brow pencil would come off leaving her with no brows. They apparently had never seen her without them. A few months after we finished her she came back to visit to let me know that it had literally changed her life. She was no longer sitting on the sidelines watching. I definitely never thought when I first started doing permanent makeup that it could be life changing for some people but it absolutely can!
Rachel, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a Makeup Artist/cosmetologist for over 30yrs. I was blessed to have worked at Urban Retreat spa in River oaks for 20yrs I started there at the age of 19 doing nails then eventually moving into the makeup dept and finally becoming international educator & trainer for Franche Mineral cosmetics. Which was owned by the same owner as the spa, we sold only to high end spas like the “Golden Door” and “The Green Briar” just to name a few. When we would land an account they would send me to train their staff on how to use our products or do a special event launching the product. When I wasn’t traveling I was busy working full time at the main spa . We were always learning top of the line services new innovative things we could offer our clients. I was one of the very few that offered permanent makeup back in the late 90s. It’s more common and trendy today but when I first started it was cutting edge and I was determined to make sure it was done as natural as possible. Even to this day my style and techniques is what sets me apart from other permanent artist. I have so many years of regular makeup artistry (which is still my first love) so many people go out get certified after a couple hours and they have never put regular makeup on someone but yet they are tattooing it on! That is pretty crazy and scary to me!!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When Urban Retreat was sold I had to make the difficult decision to either go with the new owners , find a new place to work or take a leap of faith that my clients would follow me and open my own Makeup studio. That is how Fabulous Faces by Rachel was formed. Was it scary? Heck yes, it still is lol !! I also had the opportunity to take over my family business which is completely different from the spa industry. We have a Roller Skating rink (Humble Family Skate center) which will be 45yrs this year. I am the General manager going on 12yrs now so I get to do two things that I love.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Still today 30 plus years later, customer referrals are still the number 1 Best way to get New clients. I would say 90% are from referrals. I am very grateful to my clients for continuing to support me thru the years
