We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Queen Bassey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Queen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I first learned my craft by fixing my mind on wanting to learn! I started by watching different outlets and practicing different ways to go about new techniques on myself and others. I think to speed up the process I probably would’ve reached out to those in my craft as well just to gain better understanding and knowledge. It’s always helpful to have hands on expertise. In my experience the skills that are the most essential are being able to connect with your audience and clients and also being open to new perspectives. In this field there are a lot of obstacles and opportunities but one obstacle that in a way hindered me coming up was juggling school , work, and regular daily life.
Queen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
So I basically started off in the industry by watching YouTube beauty influencers and merely wanting that for myself. I love everything beauty related so it definitely paved the way for my life style now. Being able to showcase my talents publicly with other like minded artists was something so pivotal for me. I do my own makeup on myself and I also have clients as a makeup artist! I utilize social to exhibit and express that as well. For my clients I make sure to give them exactly what they desire and above. I would say that is problem solving but also an experience given! I would say what sets me apart is my personality! There’s no awkwardness or shyness with my clients! We’re besties by the end of the experience. I am mostly proud of how much I’ve grown in my craft and I want others to know I do my absolute best to make everyone feel beautiful and cared for.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society can support in many ways but I feel one major way of supporting is utilizing social media outlets. Share your local artists on your socials. Expose what you find exciting or inspiring to you with others connected to you.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goals driving me are plenty but it is mainly wanting my own beauty shop to pretty attend to every sector of the beauty industry.
