Today we’d like to introduce you to Promise Okoye
Hi Promise, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a small town in West Africa in a humble family. When I was just 11, my dad passed away, and not long after, my mum was diagnosed with cancer. Life became really hard, both emotionally and financially, but I was determined not to let my struggles hold me back. I worked hard and managed to earn a university degree in Biochemistry, but my heart kept pulling me towards the beauty and hair industry.
In 2013, I moved to the UK and saw an opportunity in Scotland’s hair braiding industry. It felt like the perfect fit for me because I’ve always been passionate about helping women feel beautiful and confident.
Starting my hair braiding business wasn’t easy, though. As more people in Scotland wanted braided hairstyles, there weren’t enough skilled braiders around. I had to hire people who didn’t have experience with Afro braiding, and that meant risking the quality of my work. It was a tough problem, but I knew I had to find a solution.
I teamed up with another experienced stylist, and together, we started workshops and apprenticeship programs to teach others. It wasn’t easy, but we attracted people who were passionate about learning, and slowly, we built a community of skilled braiders.
Looking back, I realise that all the hardships I went through—from losing my dad to overcoming the challenges in my business—made me stronger and more determined. My biggest motivation has always been to help women feel good about themselves, and every challenge has pushed me closer to that dream.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest challenge I face in growing Beauty Splendour isn’t just about attracting skilled braiders, but keeping them in the profession long-term. Hair braiding is physically demanding, and the toll it takes on the body can be overwhelming.
Braiders often suffer from repetitive strain injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, and pain in their backs, necks, and shoulders from long hours spent in the same positions. These health issues can seriously impact their ability to work, leading to burnout, frequent sick days, and, sometimes, forcing them to leave the job altogether.
To tackle this issue, I’ve taken steps to make the work environment as comfortable and healthy as possible. I’ve invested in ergonomic equipment like adjustable chairs and set up proper workstations to reduce the physical strain. I also encourage my braiders to take regular breaks, stretch, and seek physical therapy when needed to prevent injuries from worsening.
Beyond that, I’ve created simple workplace manuals that emphasise the importance of self-care and provide information on health resources. My goal is to raise awareness about how crucial it is for braiders to take care of themselves, both for their well-being and to ensure they can keep doing what they love for years to come.
At Beauty Splendour, I believe that when we prioritise the health and happiness of our team, everyone benefits. It creates a healthier, more sustainable work environment where my braiders can thrive and feel supported in their craft.
We’ve been impressed with Beauty Splendour, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Hi, I’m Promise, the proud owner and founder of Beauty Splendour, Scotland’s hottest braid salon! We’re known for our unique, intricate braiding patterns and trendy Afro hair styling techniques. With over 25 years of experience, I’ve had the honour of working with and styling Afro hair, a true passion of mine. Since launching Beauty Splendour in Glasgow in 2013, my business has grown tremendously, thanks to an incredible team that shares my love for what we do.
We’ve had the privilege of serving over 2,800 clients, and I’m so proud to say we’ve received more than 500 five-star reviews across all of our platforms. Our hard work even led to winning the “Best Afro Hair Salon” award at the 2022 Scotland Business Awards, followed by the 2023 Circle of Inspiration Award, and most recently, we’ve been named a Finalist for Afro Stylist of the Year 2024 at the Beauty Full Awards.
What makes my work so rewarding is seeing the joy on my clients’ faces after they leave the salon. There’s nothing quite like transforming someone’s look and seeing them stand a little taller, feeling more confident and beautiful. This is why I started Beauty Splendour — to inspire people to look good, feel good, and be their best selves.
In an industry filled with talent, I always aim to stay ahead by constantly innovating. From the moment a client books an appointment to the time they leave our salon, it’s important that they feel valued and cared for. It’s this personal touch and attention to detail that sets us apart from the rest.
Right now, I’m also focused on giving back to the community by organising workshops and apprenticeship programs to nurture local talent. There’s a real shortage of skilled braiders in the market, and by fostering a culture of learning, I hope to strengthen and grow the Afro hair braiding industry here in Scotland.
What makes you happy?
Happiness for me is the joy of weaving stories into each hair strand, creating intricate braids that reflect a person’s individuality. It’s the pure contentment that comes from seeing a client’s face light up, knowing that my hands have turned their vision into reality. It’s the sound of laughter in my salon, the satisfaction of clients returning because they trust my artistry, and the deep connection that forms when I share in someone’s special moments—whether it’s for a festival, a wedding, or simply a personal transformation.
Happiness for me is found in the rhythmic, almost meditative flow of braiding, in the creative freedom of designing unique styles, and in the vibrant energy of Scotland’s multicultural beauty scene. It’s in the simple yet profound fulfilment of knowing that my craft helps others feel beautiful, confident, and truly seen.
