We recently connected with Phil Bass and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Phil thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew of my path in my early teenage years and subsequently started working in my profession at the age of 14.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started as a paid/professional musician at 14 years old, working 6 nights a week performing in a dinner club. I have been doing live performance and studio work for the last 48 years. I continue this today. I was always interested in photography and did it as a hobby through the years. When covid happened, a lot of this type of work (music performing and recording) dried up. That is when I started taking my photography / videography much more seriously. In 2021 my wife and I started a business “Bass Media Services” and begin our journey in that world. We have a very face to face approach in our work and seek out clients in fields we find interesting to us first. I think this gives us a great energy with the clients because we are interested in those things personally. When you are excited genuinely about what they do it makes their experience as well as ours much more productive. As far as problem solving, our knowledge and open mindedness when working with clients goes a long way. I think our strong point is the fact that we bring so many different skills to the table such as: Video, Photography, Art Work, the ability to record podcast and interviews, custom music needs, as well as culinary experience. We have worked successfully in these fields and having somewhat of a one stop shop for so many things is beneficial we believe!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot from my full time musician life when covid happened. Within a couple of weeks most all of the live work as well as a lot of the studio work disappeared. As it did for so so many. That’s when the videography and photography passion kicked in. Funny how so many people had reevaluating experiences which some how was a positive thing in their lives that would not have happened otherwise. My wife Tiffany, also experienced this. She was a patisserie chef and had a bakery business on the way. That was changing also and being a painter also pushed or pivoted her life more so in the same direction. Working together has been a blessing of sorts for our passions in art and our personal lives together.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The book ” The Power of Now” ( some sections, haha!) is a big one just on it’s life philosophy lessons. There are many that I could name that have more insightful lessons rather than specific business ( our business skills could use some help btw, creatives don’t always make great business people) and management lessons. Videos on the technical side of things are invaluable, have a question, the internet has plenty of answers ( : Other resources include podcast on all of these subjects as well as YouTube interviews with people sharing their philosophy and lessons they have encountered.
