Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Peter Daily. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Peter, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
When I was a teenager, around 17 or 18 years old.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into music at a very early age. My parents were Gospel singers and I spent a good part of my youth living on a tour bus traveling all across North America. I started singing/performing in front of crowds when I was 4 or 5 years old. I started playing drums when I was about 9 or 10 and began learning to play the piano a few years after that. So, music has always been a part my life for a far back as I can remember. In 2004 I joined my brothers hip-hop group (ill harmonics) as their drummer. It was on that first tour that I met hip-hop artist Pigeon John. When the tour ended John asked me to come out on the road with him as his drummer and I’ve been his touring musical director since 2005, touring all across Europe and North America. While on tour with Pigeon John, I met drummer Darius Minaee who was drumming for hip-hop artist Lyrics Born. Darius and I became close friends and formed the Royal Band in 2010. In 2012 we tapped our friend Adam MacDougall (Circles Around the Sun) to be our producer and cut ten songs and ended up working with a bunch of great LA musicians including guitarist Brian Ray (Paul McCartney).
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2017 I was in a really wicked car accident. I broke all my ribs, my nose as well as my right hip. It took the better part of a year to learn to walk again and regain my mobility. Before the accident I was working on a bunch of projects and the accident forced me to take a year off to rehabilitate. During that time I wasn’t sure if I would ever make music again, much less tour and have a career anymore. But, I’ve been truly blessed. I bounced back from the accident, toured Europe last year with Pigeon John, and am doing this interview from my studio.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yeah, I think my goal (or mission) is to do the very best I can to make the world a better place. I know that probably seems cliche but, it’s hard not to notice all the negative things happening around us (mass shootings, racism, police brutality, etc.). I definitely don’t sit down to write a song and say “how can I make the world a better place with this song?” but my hope would be that the music and art I create helps make some sort of difference in the world.
