We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Peiru Kim. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Peiru below.
Hi Peiru, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents are my heroes, growing up watching them work tirelessly to provide for our family made me who I am today. They taught me work ethic by their actions. They showed me dedication and what unconditional love looks like by example. My parents met as young teenagers, my father gave a promise to cherish my mom for life and has kept his promise for their entire 55 years of marriage. my dad’s devotion and faithfulness to my mom and our family is what I strive to achieve in life as a mother and wife to my family. Life is about serving and making life better for those who we meet and care for along the way. My parents taught me to “say less and do more” . Work hard, stay true, and never forget who you are.

Peiru, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Many of you who love our brand often ask about our owner. We are not a franchise, we are made in Atlanta and locally owned and operated. Here is the story about our little busy bee 🐝 from College Park, GA.
Peiru Kim, a Georgia Tech graduate stumbled upon her passion in beauty after a pivot in her career from real estate. She purchased Sugarcoat Beauty in 2010 from an online business listing and started life as a small business owner. She attended beauty school at night to learn the business from ground up while running the business during the day. She worked 7 days a week and immersed in daily operations to learn everything she could about the business. From the front of the house to the back of the house, she wanted to learn it all. What she loved the most was the people she served, she wanted to make a difference for those she got to touch day in and day out. She loves her team, her clients, and the community. The biggest reward to her was seeing the smiling faces leaving and coming back year after year. Her vision is to create a beautiful space for people to gather, to give the best self care experience to the community she serves. Peiru is fearlessly protective of her tribe of hard working women/men. A career in nail care should not be discriminated against, so she had her business plan set to build the ultimate nail salon to change things up, and to set a new standard. Each year, she looked to improve each store built, the salons are looking better and better each year and now we have made a real noticeable difference in the nail industry. We now have 10 locations and are so happy to say we have changed the way nail salons look and operate for the better and we will not stop to continue to improve. Our salons are modern, clean, and beautiful. A great place to work and a relaxing place to get pampered.
We have clean air technology, extra ventilation built into our manicure tables, pipeless glass pedicure bowls, non toxic nail polishes, no drilling extensions, healthy for you nail enhancement, we are constantly innovating because there is always room for more growth and improvement.
As Dr. Martin Luther King said:
“ if I cannot do great things, I can do great things in a small way”.
We at Sugarcoat will continue to advocate for the woman and men in the nail care and beauty industry, we will continue to do better and be better, help each other by uplifting one another serving with humility and honesty for the greater good. True happiness is knowing you made someone’s else’s day a little brighter! Let’s Sugarcoat life with kindness, compassion, and truly love one another.
We thank you all for your support of Sugarcoat for the past eleven years, we truly appreciate all of you from the bottom of our heart. Happy New Year!!! We hope to have the pleasure to serve you for many more years to come!!!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
To be successful in this field and in life to me is simple:
Trust in God
Find your purpose
Work hard + show up+ never give up!!!

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2021, ten years after opening the first nail salon location, I was given the opportunity to expand Sugarcoat from a nail bar to a full service salon, offering hair, facials, massages. I took over a fully furnished salon without having to pay key money to construct it. The salon is beautiful but it has been a huge challenge for me. I’ve learn that nothing is free in life, I am learning a brand new category of service and I am up for the challenge. I am in the valley but I am thriving and staying focused, and trusting God to guide me and show me the way. I believe and I know this period of testing and pressure is God’s way of preparing me and molding me to be better serve his Kingdom.
