We were lucky to catch up with Payton Walker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Payton , appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Following My Dream Over a Conventional Path
The biggest risk I’ve ever taken wasn’t a calculated business move—it was a risk on myself and my dreams.
Creating your own business from just an idea can be terrifying. There aren’t many people out there who’ve built something like Pawnd’r, and that uncertainty kept me up at night. But I also knew this was something desperately needed in our animal-loving world. The gap was there. The mission was clear. The only question was whether I had the courage to fill it.
The real turning point came when I made the decision to leave veterinary school. Walking away from a traditional, secure path to invest everything into my own vision—that was the moment it became real. It was scary. Really scary. But it was also the moment I chose myself and my dream.
Looking back now, it was absolutely worth it. I get to live my dream life every single day, helping people all over the world find their perfect companion from no-kill shelters and connecting them with the resources they need. That’s something I never would have experienced staying on the conventional path.
What I’ve learned is this: risks are absolutely worth taking—but only if you’re willing to be a good decision maker and an even better leader. You have to know yourself, trust your instincts, and be ready to lead with integrity when things get tough.
For anyone out there sitting on the edge of a big decision: the scariest risks are often the ones most worth taking.

Payton , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
About Me & Pawnd’r
Who I Am
My name is Payton Walker, and I’m the founder and CEO of Pawnd’r. I’m an animal lover at heart with a deep passion for animal welfare and a mission to change the world, one animal at a time. After leaving veterinary school to pursue this vision, I’ve dedicated myself to building a platform that makes ethical pet adoption accessible, convenient, and community-driven. Luckily I grew up in a family that loved animals, so this career path was not a shock.
My journey into this space wasn’t traditional. I was on the path to becoming a veterinarian—a respected, secure career that made sense on paper. But the more I progressed, the more I realized my true passion lay elsewhere. I saw a massive gap in the pet adoption and pet services landscape: there was no unified, trustworthy platform that exclusively connected people with no-kill shelters while also providing access to local pet services and community support.
That realization became the spark for Pawnd’r in 2020. I took the leap, left vet school, and invested everything into turning an idea into reality. It was terrifying, but it was also the best decision I’ve ever made.
What Pawnd’r Does:
Pawnd’r is a comprehensive mobile app and platform designed for pet lovers who want to adopt ethically and access pet-related services all in one place. We operate in the northern United States and are expanding globally.
Our Core Features:
Ethical Pet Adoption:
We partner exclusively with no-kill shelters—never breeders, never kill shelters. This is non-negotiable. When you adopt through Pawndr, you’re supporting animal welfare and giving a deserving pet a second chance.
Smart Matching:
Our matching algorithm filters adoptable pets by breed, energy level, and size to help you find your perfect companion faster—often twice as fast as traditional adoption methods.
Local Pet Services Directory:
We map and connect users with verified, pet-related businesses in their area—from veterinarians and pet food shops to groomers, trainers, and pet-friendly venues.
Lost & Found Pet Alerts:
If your pet goes missing, you can create a profile and instantly alert all users within a 15-mile radius. We’ve already reunited 5 lost pets with their families through this feature alone.
Community-Driven Platform:
Pawnd’r is built on the belief that pet lovers form a community. We foster connection, support, and shared responsibility for animal welfare.
What I Want People to Know
All-in-One Ecosystem
We’re not just an adoption platform. We’ve built a complete ecosystem that addresses the entire pet owner journey—from finding your pet, to accessing local services, to community support when things go wrong (like lost pet alerts).
1. Pawndr is for Everyone Who Loves Animals
Whether you’re looking to adopt, seeking local pet services, or want to help reunite lost pets—there’s a place for you here. You don’t have to be a “perfect” adopter or have experience with pets. You just need to care.
2. Adoption Saves Lives
When you adopt from a no-kill shelter through Pawndr, you’re directly supporting animal welfare. You’re choosing compassion over convenience, and that matters.
3. We’re Just Getting Started
We’re still early-stage with 50 active users and 5 shelter partners. But we’re growing, and we have ambitious plans to expand across the U.S. and globally. If you believe in our mission, now is the time to join us.
4. Community Matters
Pawndr works best when our community is engaged—sharing stories, alerting neighbors about lost pets, supporting local businesses, and spreading the word about ethical adoption. We’re building something together.
5. Your Support Drives Our Mission
Whether you adopt through Pawndr, list your business with us, partner as a shelter, or simply share our mission with friends—you’re helping us change the world, one animal at a time.
Looking Forward
My vision for Pawndr is to become the go-to platform for ethical pet adoption and community-driven pet services globally. I want to make it so easy and rewarding to adopt from no-kill shelters that it becomes the default choice. I want to empower shelters with technology that removes barriers to adoption. And I want to build a community so strong and connected that lost pets are reunited quickly, and pet lovers everywhere feel supported.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A big lesson I had to unlearn is you cannot trust everyone.
In 2020, when I began the journey of developing Pawnd’r I needed help finding the right team to code and develop the idea. After tons of research and reaching out to developers around the world, I landed on a team from “New York” that had a ton of positive reviews, good team communication at first, and a reasonable price point (so I thought) After the first few months of a 6-month development communication started to waiver – I had put $4000 down for the first half of the project and would pay the rest upon completion. The app was created and through our meetings and screen shares everything looked great, once I paid the final $4000 payment the “company” disappeared, leaving me with a fake code, and no work to show for what I had been working so hard to finish. I broke down. Ready to give up – I looked into my heart and said “If I let this one bad experience stop me, then this company deserves a better leader.” So I became that leader, no one was going to stop me from creating a safe space for our beloved animal community, and 5 years later we are functioning in several places all over the world. Still have a lot of work to do, but excited for what the next 5 years hold.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media can be extremely intimating, but when you stop looking at it as another thing to do and begin using it has a fun way to connect with your clients everything changes. We stopped trying to sell our product or idea, and started providing helpful information to pet parents, businesses, and shelters in hopes that our videos would help them grow in the right direction. Social Media has several different categories, but one of the highest ones are education! Provide help and people will naturally come to ask questions and engage with your content. Also BE YOURSELF! There are to many fake accounts out there we need real personable people to create content not powered by AI
