We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Paul McFall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Paul, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Most solopreneurs starting off in creative industries have a hard time coming up with the funding and available time needed to develop a successful business. In terms of finance, they are more likely to bootstrap and acquire majority of their equipment and support using funds from a full-time job and available credit. However, the second pitfall is that a creators ability to be successful is also based on the amount of time they have available to work in the first place. Having a full-time job subtracts a substantial amount of time and energy available to a creator and if there are further responsibilities such caring for a family at home, finding time to work on your side hustle can seem next to impossible.
When I first set out to build Capital Films DC in 2015, I was very much in the same situation. I commuted to my cyber security job three hours a day and spent an additional eight to ten hours in the office. Outside of a normal workday, I would possibly spend up to 16 hours working on projects while on travel around the United States for what could be weeks at a time. I didn’t go to school for the Arts, but I did have a bit of knowledge from working with my father throughout my childhood during his time as a photographer in the 90’s. This small leg up gave me insight into what Capital Films DC could be based on current technology and growth of the creative production industry. After learning everything that I possibly could absorb from YouTube on film and photography, I began purchasing exactly what I needed with the help of a credit card. I decided to try my hand at Wedding filmmaking. This was a slow grind; however, I received amazing feedback from customers which fueled me to keep going. Any bit of time that I would have after work was dedicated solely to Building Capital Films DC. After two years, we surpassed our break even Mark and became profitable. Within 5 years our customer base had grown substantially and enabled us to hire contractors consisting of photographers, videographers and editors, further contributing to our scalability. Today, Capital Films DC is a thriving Company within the wedding and commercial creative production industry.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Paul Mcfall IV and I’m the owner of Capital Films DC based in our nations capital of Washington, DC. My creative journey began around the age of 13 with my father Paul McFall III who was a photographer at the time. After he would arrived home from an event, I would often assist with organizing and editing photos which introduced me to the Adobe suite and the creative mindset that comes along with it. As time passed and cameras became video capable, I began to immerse myself in the world of cinematography. I even started a Youtube channel where I would teach different shooting and editing techniques to whoever was willing to listen. After graduating from college with a masters degree in computer science, I knew that the technical landscape was vastly different from what was available to my father all those years ago. So I came up with the name Capital Films DC, built out the infrastructure for a creative business and obtained a trademark. In 2015, we acquired our first wedding customer and many others following. Fast forwarding to 2024, Capital Films DC became a survivor of the COVID Pandemic and is now a thriving creative production company serving companies and wedding couples all over the world.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
During my extremely long commutes to work at the time, I would often read audiobooks. One in particular was the everything store, which was based on Jeff Bezos and the founding of Amazon. There was a line that stated “be customer obsessed”. Ever since reading that quote, I dedicated Capital Films DC to achieving the highest customer satisfaction rate at any cost. I built a reputation on the fact that we are always available for our clients and produce products that exquisitely represent their visions and brands.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I believe a story that we can all relate to is that of the COVID pandemic and the wrath that it released upon our world. I can recall that two weeks before the pandemic I was projecting the highest ever profitable year to date for Capital Films DC. Once we were hit by the pandemic, both our profits and customers were extinguished to zero leaving me in a world of pure uncertainty. The news was horrifying as millions were losing their lives and thousands of companies were going out of business per day. I begin to apply for any and all government funding I could come across on the Internet. Once the world started to open up a bit, we came up with new services for wedding and commercial production projects that fit COVID protocols. It wasn’t until the day where I finally got sick with COVID that I thought all was lost. The only option I had was to reach out for help. I trusted our lead contractors at the time to handle everything without me and they did an amazing job. We still work together till this day and have applied every lesson we’ve learned since.
