We recently connected with Paul Magege Jr, and have shared our conversation below.
Paul , appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about an important lesson you learned while working at a prior job?
The most important lesson I gained from a job experience that helped me as a business owner was that my role as a community center assistant was during my undergraduate studies. This is a front desk position in a dorm housing and residence facility, and I held this job for almost three years. It taught me about helping people, diversity, and community. I was the first face that people saw and sometimes, if not all the time, the last face they saw when they left. It taught me about problem-solving, conflict resolution, and organizational skills through constantly being challenged by real-life situations that can unfold in seconds and require quick thinking. In essence, it really taught me to be prepared for anything, that you can learn from anybody, and that one simple talk or greeting can sometimes make or break somebody’s day. Finally, it taught me that you never know what somebody is going through, but you can meet them where they are (and do business with them).

Paul , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
If you have not heard or read about me before, I am Paul Magege Jr., also known as lifeofpjr, and I am a Visual artist and entrepreneur specializing in Business Administration located in Maryland. I chose entrepreneurship as a business degree because I knew I wanted to be an owner since I was 16 years old. My photography business mainly focuses on offering products related to fine art or lifestyle photography, and I got into my craft through years of this being a passionate hobby of mine to document my life, but being told I had a gift by family and friends that turned into an artistic recognition that I am grateful for. The problems I solve for clients are communication of my emotions through conceptual visual arts for social commentary, and abstract ideas with my unique style in order to make people feel something…Anything.
I think photography has a beautiful way of solving problems through pausing a moment for eternity; there is a serious power in that. As far as entrepreneurship, I problem-solve by facing societal challenges as business opportunities. At the time I’m writing this, I am approaching 25 years old, and I suppose what sets me apart is my unique perspective and brain when it comes to seeing life, but at the same time, I am still human. I am most proud of my ability to invoke emotion in my audience, that’s all I do it for is expression and therapy for not just myself and others. For any future supporters and clients, please know that this did not happen overnight; I never gave up, and I faced real dark nights, but I persevered, and anyone can.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In business and in life, I feel that I’m blessed and honored to even be here typing right now and that I have been able to pivot enough to make it to this point. A specific story would have to be in life. When I graduated from my undergraduate College with my BBA in entrepreneurship, I had a life plan and a true vision of how everything was supposed to go, and that didn’t happen. I had to reevaluate my business and career plan and restructure my life to not just how I wanted it to look, but in real life, how it can go for me. I changed jobs and changed my focus in my career plan, and it feels scary at first because there is no map, but you have to make your own way and learn as you go.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
A story I can give for my journey is having to surrender control to my parents and moving around as a kid. For me, it was elementary and high school. When you’re a child, when you don’t have any sense of stability and understanding why things are happening, it can be hard for a child to understand, I didn’t understand. Now that I’m older, I understand that things truly do happen, and even adults can’t control it; they are adjusting just like you. This made me resilient to change and gave me the resilience to be able to grow within unfamiliarity.
