We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Patty Myasia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Patty, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?

I knew I wanted to pursue creativity since a very young girl. I’ve always used clothing/fashion as a way to express myself. I am extremely introverted, so I use art/fashion as a way to speak. It’s my way to introduce without opening my mouth to be vocal. I combined two of the things I love most—art and fashion, to create one world and introduce Piece by PMR.

Patty, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My brand is Piece by PMR, hand-painted black luxury. The goal has and always will be, to create with purpose. For Black Women, first. Everything I make is luxury, because a black woman painted it. I hand-paint apparel and accessories. My brand is very much a “for us, by us” it’s exclusively for the culture.

Outside of fashion design/stylist, I also have a fragrance called EYEcon. The reason for the title is my way of paying homage to creatives. Dedicated to the VISIONaries, the dreamers, the elegant, the rebels, for the woman.

I am most proud of the way my pieces make black women feel. It makes me smile big how empowered they feel, when wearing my creativity.

Is there a mission driving your creative journey?

My goal is to creatively disrupt. My art is how I use my voice, I want to keep the light turned on—on important things that go on in the world vs black/brown people. I also want to continually celebrate us, without ever selling our trauma back to us. The goal is to—inspire, empower, disrupt. Inspire/empower the culture, disrupt the world.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?

The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the freedom. You’re fully in control of the message you give to the world. You’ll never be silenced, it’s your voice and your world, you’re free.
