Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Patience Jackson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Patience, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
Legacy! That word rings HIGH pitched in my mind. I am apart of a legacy. Family dance business passed to me. I have the baton now. I am in motion of creating my own legacy that is in line with my purpose. Dance revolutionary. I am very in tune with spirit. I can do anything through Christ. I am meant for greatness. My perspective on life and self will move mountains and oceans. I want my impact to be bigger than my business. By choosing to be intentional with every move, the world is a better place. I hope my legacy encourages and uplifts young dancers to reach as high as they want to. I am looking to get everyone who can move to GROOVE!
Patience, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Patience Jackson! I am a dance teacher. I have been teaching since I was 9 years old right behind my mother. In 2009, she opened up a brick and mortar, called A Time To Dance Studio. As early as 12yrs old, I began to dream about how I could take our studio and my passion for dance to the next level. Fast forward to the present, we have rebranded our name to BustinMoves TV. One thing about me, I have to remind myself frequently of our business’ accomplishments. Over the course of 2 years, we have been blessed to bring joy and smiles to the hearts of millions on social media through the power of dance! I am now refocusing our gift to the children of our communities. BustinMoves TV has impacted the dance community with a $10,000 cash prize, dance battles, and a national meet and greet. Our impact is so big and a lot of that is due to my mother. She has now passed the business to me and there is no way that I will let this impact slip through my fingers. As a young girl, the importance of showing up for myself was not instilled in me. I am refocusing my gift of instruction of dance to teach young girls who remind me so much of myself at that age like me how to be unapologetically themselves.
I have been dancing since diapers. I am mostly self taught when it comes to skill. Youtube was my bestfriend through middle and high school. Then along came social media where I was actually able to watch some of my favorite dancers in real time. As I personally developed, so did my dance skill. Everyday, I was exposed to an area of my dance life where I could improve. When my mom opened the dance studio, I was exposed to dancers that could move and twist their bodies in a way that was so unique. Naturally, I mimicked them, eventually morphing myself into my own mover. I was able to create choreography at a young age. I remember creating a dance to Ciara’s, “Gimme Dat” in the Walmart check out section. With NO EARPHONES. My brain is a choreographing machine. This is my gift and I am proud of it. I was able to turn this gift of choreography into my JOB!
I have a number of services available! I am set apart from an average teacher because I ensure that you are understanding each move and how they flow into one another. I am a professional dance teacher and choreographer. My personal goals have also advanced, adding to the credibility of Bustin Moves TV. I have choreographed 2 plays. Grovetown High Schools, “HairSpray” and Russell Joel Browns, “Mozart to Motown!” I have produced, edited, choreographed over 10 dance concept videos. We have grown a following on youtube of over 160,000 subscribers for our family dance, and now have an APP where you can access our beginner Step by Step tutorials. Book me for any private lesson, dance show, group dance party’s and so much more. You can download BMTV on Google Play and App Store! I am for the culture. BustinMoves Tv is for dance revolution. Ain’t no stopping us NOW!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am patting myself on the back. The most rewarding thing is the positive feedback I get from my supporters. That is what keeps me going. Being able to do what I love and see people loving it too is just unmatched. One thing about me, I have to remind myself frequently of our business’ accomplishments. It is easy to get lost and forget when we have goals that we want to meet. However, I am proud of our sustainability. I am proud of the following we have grown over the past 2 years. I am proud of my high school play I choreographed. I am proud of the work I do as a dance teacher. I am proud of being able to get up everyday and choose to smile. Most importantly, I am VERY PROUD of the impact my dance has had on others! If you could see the feedback we get on our posts! People have decided to change their lives because of my moves. Their are hundreds of comments on the daily telling us how we have changed the course of their bad day into a good one. The joy that comes from me doing what I love? That is the biggest accomplishment. I remember one comment told me that she was having the worst month and she watched my “Whoop, there it is” video and she smiled for the first time in weeks! We are put on this earth to spread love doing what we love and that is just what we do. We change lives, we change days. Our light is a direct reflection of the love and grace God gives us to prosper. Spreading his love is the ultimate goal, and I believe we are doing this every single day.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I do not believe that their are “non creatives” There is a spark of creativity somewhere in everyone. Whether they have tapped into or not is the real question. The journey begins as soon as you take that first step and it is not something for anyone to even HAVE to understand. Listen, I have seen a person bound to a wheelchair do a 360 flip. I have seen artwork from a person who can’t see. Yes, a blind artist. It’s easy to look at an artist/creative and wonder why they are even doing the things they are. The hard part is realizing that this person may just be saving someone’s life with their passion! Let’s remember to quit questioning someone else’s why. Stay in your lane while others test the limits of their own. Personally, I have had people look at me like I was crazy for dancing on the side of the road, but what they can’t see is the shot I am trying to get! That goes for every artist. If you are reading this, my advice to you is to move with intention and forget what anyone else might even have to mutter. You walk for yourself and not for anyone else.
