We were lucky to catch up with PAT WILLIAMS recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, PAT thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most meaningful project to date would have to be writing and producing my first solo EP, ‘Inclusive, Vol.1’, as an independent Jazz artist. Throughout my career as a professional musician, I’ve supported numerous other bands and artists in multiple capacities: whether it was recording drums for albums; producing and arranging music; or as a band leader and Musical director. Now, having my own band and writing my own original music, I was able to take all of the experiences I’ve learned and utilize them on my own project.

PAT , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Pat Williams, and I am a native Houstonian. I’ve been a professional drummer for over 25 years, playing Gospel, Jazz, and R&B. I’ve been the Musical Director (MD) for numerous national and international recording artists that perform in the Houston market. Some notable artists I’ve played with include; Bob James, Lalah Hathaway, Bobby Lyle, Sy Smith, Kyle Turner, Kurt Carr, Mike Phillips, Tony Terry, and Joe Sample.
It has always been my goal to curate mature live musical experiences for all audiences, therefore, in 2013, I started my own band The Pat Williams Group.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A story that illustrates my resilience would be me completing my EP during COVID-19! I’d started writing original music a while back, and because of my work schedule and constantly gigging and performing, I didn’t have much time to focus on the creative process. So, when COVID hit, I was “forced” to slow down and utilize my down time. During that time, I taught myself the basics of some home recording software; created a drum recording studio at home; started working with some other amazing writers and producers to finish the writing process of my music. That process included sending out instrumentation parts to different musicians and having them record their parts at their personal studios.
This had to happen on the majority of the project. Thankfully, it turned out well!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is when I play my original music live and see that those that are listening to it are enjoying it.
