We were lucky to catch up with Paige Mejia recently and have shared our conversation below.
Paige , appreciate you joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
While many businesses begin by building a local client base before expanding to national or international recognition, Pyrotex experienced growth in the opposite direction. Founded by Randy Beckham, the company began in the world of concert pyrotechnics after securing the Bee Gees Stayin’ Alive Tour in 1979. Over the next fifteen years, Randy produced displays around the globe for high-profile clients and major film and theatre productions.
When I joined the company in 2011, the industry had shifted in a way that allowed us to focus closer to home while continuing to strategically grow and strengthen our pipeline. I quickly discovered that active networking within the events industry was one of the most effective ways to grow the business. By positioning Pyrotex as the most recognized fireworks company in the market, a trusted industry expert, and a valued resource for guidance and referrals beyond fireworks, we established long-lasting relationships throughout the industry.
Today, Pyrotex primarily serves the North Texas region, producing more than 175 shows annually for weddings, corporate events, milestone celebrations, and city festivals. While celebrity performances are now a smaller part of our portfolio, the company’s revenue has more than doubled over the past fifteen years through strategic relationship-building, industry expertise, and a strong reputation for excellence.

Paige , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
After graduating from University of North Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Decision Science, I began my career in Corporate America as a Senior Analyst. Shortly after entering the workforce, I started my family, and after the birth of my second child, I had the opportunity to step away from corporate life to focus on raising my children.
During that time, I launched a video production company, which ultimately introduced me to the events industry. As my children entered elementary school, I considered returning to a traditional corporate career; however, the flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit I had experienced over the previous five years made it difficult to return to a conventional 9-to-5 role. Seeking an opportunity that would allow me to remain in the events industry while maintaining flexibility for my family, I turned to social media in search of the right fit. Randy Beckham, founder of Pyrotex, answered that call.
In 2011, I joined Pyrotex as Sales Director and continue to lead sales efforts for the company today. Following Randy’s passing in 2017, ownership transitioned to members of the corporate office team, including myself.
As the oldest Texas-based professional fireworks display company, Pyrotex has long been recognized as an industry leader. Randy was widely regarded as an expert in the pyrotechnics field, serving on the legislative committee that helped bring indoor pyrotechnics to Texas and contributing to the development of the original Texas State Fire Code. Today, Pyrotex continues that legacy by training local and state fire marshals on regulations surrounding professional firework displays.
Beyond our technical expertise, I attribute much of the company’s continued growth to my active involvement within the events industry. I have served on the Board of Directors for seven industry associations, including as President of the MPI DFW Chapter and the Texas Live Events Coalition. I also founded the Industry President Council, an initiative designed to strengthen collaboration and unity within the North Texas events community. Currently, I serve as Southwest Regional Chair for MPI (Meeting Professionals International) Global.
The relationships, industry knowledge, and leadership experience gained through these organizations have played a significant role in helping Pyrotex continue to grow, evolve, and thrive over the years.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
People are often surprised to learn that I worked as a detention officer while attending college. Although the experience did not harden me, it did require me to develop a very different communication style than the one typically associated with customer service and sales. Managing inmate intake and working within a correctional environment demanded professionalism, composure, and the ability to navigate a wide range of personalities and high-stress situations.
While the corrections field and sales may seem worlds apart, both ultimately center on understanding people. Learning how to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds, adapt to varying personalities, and manage emotionally charged situations has proven invaluable throughout my career in the events industry—particularly in navigating high-pressure environments and complex client relationships in the events industry.
After leaving the jail system, I worked briefly as a Resident Retention Manager for a large apartment community. That role became a turning point for me personally and professionally, as it reminded me of the importance of empathy, patience, and human connection. I realized that every person carries a unique story and arrives at challenging situations with their own past experiences.
Over time, I rediscovered my bubbly personality and genuine passion for helping others that had always been part of who I am. That passion only grew stronger when I transitioned into the world of sales, where relationship-building, trust, and service became the foundation of my professional success.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
A strategic combination of networking and social media has played a significant role in building my reputation within the events industry—though not in the traditional promotional sense. While I actively engage on platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram, my approach has always focused more on providing value than directly promoting our services.
Within event industry Facebook groups, I rarely center conversations around fireworks. Instead, I use the knowledge and experience I have gained over the past fifteen years to answer industry-related questions, provide referrals, and connect professionals with valuable resources and opportunities. I also enjoy mentoring new and growing businesses by sharing how strategic networking and relationship-building can contribute to long-term business growth.
One of the most impactful resources I have created is a weekly networking post shared within a major industry Facebook group. Each week, I compile and distribute a comprehensive list of industry events—including open houses, association meetings, networking lunches, happy hours, educational programs, and other opportunities for event professionals to connect and grow their businesses.
After consistently producing this resource for more than thirteen years, I have become widely recognized for it within the industry. While the post is not directly tied to promoting Pyrotex’s services, it has established me as a trusted and reliable resource within the community. That credibility and trust have translated into meaningful business growth, as people are far more likely to do business with professionals they know, trust, and view as genuine contributors to their industry community.
