We recently connected with Olivia Orona and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Olivia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The biggest risk I’ve taken in my career was not going back to a Corporate job to become a full time Creative. I use to be very successful in managing a team and reaching company goals. I was passionate about training, development and helping others grow into management roles. I pushed a positive work culture constantly. I then realized my mental health was failing and I made a hard decision to pursue not only something I loved but something that could help me manage my mental health better.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
A year ago I decided to join a community, SA Creatives to break into the Photography scene in San Antonio. I met so many people, built my portfolio and even joined the team as an official leader. Through my experience with SA Creatives and the many connections I made networking, I found a need to build an all women’s creative community. Tejanas in media was born. I wanted to be able to connect Women creatives to women owned businesses. We host events to connect both parties and offer media services to businesses. Our goal is to grow together and build community helping each other to succeed together. I’m extremely proud of the growth we’ve made so far and I’m excited to continue to build a foundation for future creatives.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I went through different stages in my social media presence. From trying to be the funny one, a food blogger and then I realized the only thing that worked was being raw. My audience connected with me being open and vulnerable. Once I shared how I struggled with many things but never gave up, my audience grew. I try to connect and share my experiences to inspire others. I know how it feels to think you’re the only one struggling but it’s been proven everyone is. Once you start showing others who you really are and how you really feel, you’ll gain the opportunity to have more doors open for you, from people you met along the way believing in you.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is sharing your art with others and see if they connect to your message. Do they feel what you feel. That then becomes a connection and collaboration.
