Today we’d like to introduce you to Oliver Caspersen.
Hi Oliver, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been drawn to film and storytelling, and it all really started when I studied film in London. What I learned, though, wasn’t just technical skills—it was about seeing life as a dream, full of contradictions and surprises. Over the years, I’ve faced a lot of challenges, including a Western I worked on for nearly five years that was totally derailed by distribution issues. But I’ve kept pushing forward, always seeking discovery in my creative work, whether through film, cartoons, or new projects.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I’ve faced some serious challenges along the way, like working on a Western, Fear, Blood & Gold, for nearly five years, only to have the distributor completely butcher the release. They overdubbed all the main actors without telling me and didn’t inform me of the release until months later. Then there were the death threats after I released the trailer for a cartoon on Trump — even though it was pro-Trump at times, neutral in other parts. But through it all, I’ve learned to trust the creative process and keep pushing forward.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I focus on exploring creative and often unconventional narratives. I’ve directed projects like Fear, Blood & Gold, a Western that taught me the harsh realities of distribution, and Agent Orange, a cartoon satirizing the Left’s ideas of Trump’s first term as president. One way I believe I am unique is: I let films “make themselves,” as it were, trusting the process and trying to open myself to instances of serendipity. I’m most proud of sticking to my vision, even when things get tough. I try to explore new territory while keeping things light, even when dealing with complex subject matter.
What are your plans for the future?
Right now, I’m in the middle of editing a film called Bloodlander, which dives into the reality of nonhuman intelligence and the multidimensionality some humans experience. It’s a mix of science fiction and real-world themes, exploring things like UFO encounters and their relation to consciousness. I’m excited to see where this project goes, as it’s quite different from my past work. My plans are to keep exploring complex, unconventional subjects, staying true to my creative process of letting films “make themselves.”
