We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Noreen Hatcher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Noreen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned to crochet through Youtube but I learned to design through trial and error. I began designing because of customer request. Each request pushed me further and further into my career and I learned more and more along the way. I don’t think there could’ve been a way for me to speed it up because its my customers that inspire me to keep going and evolving. The fundamentals are always essential. Its the foundation for everything even when I want to be creative and push my limits. Honestly the fear of being judged for the out the box items I have in mind.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I first picked up a hook I was a home health aide for a MRDD client who enjoyed it she was very high functioning. Part of my job was to create activities for us to do. I learned through Youtube so that we could do something together that she enjoyed. It turns out I enjoyed it too. The first thing I ever made was an elephant bookmark then I moved to blankets and now I love crocheting fashion (clothes and accessories). I offer all custom items from hats and purses to men women and children’s fashion items. I want all my customers to feel like they are the masterpiece because they are! The light that the world needs to see is within themselves. When my customers get happy and excited and I see the light on their face when they put on a piece of mine it make me light up. I am most proud of my evolution. I’ve come so far in spreading light that I want to continue to do so in the best way possible.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I stepped out of a semi truck and decided to focus on my creative career and my family because forced me to rest. He knew I liked the truck but I loved the money. It became undeniable when he forced me out or the semi truck in every way. He said if you don’t want to listen I will make you listen. For a long time I was trying to balance being a mom a wife a truck driver and manage orders at the same time. There was a point when I tried to step back from crocheting but it still didn’t help, my mind became so overwhelmed it broke and caused me physical pain. When it would happen I’d spend the week in the hospital because I’d be throwing up non stop but every test the doctors ran always came back clear. That was him forcing me to sit down trying to tell me to rest but I wasn’t listening. I’m so resilient that as soon as I was out of the hospital I was right back in action refusing to sit still. Well a job is only going to understand for so long because they are only focused on their bottom line. Once I realized I was killing myself working those long hours for that job trying to hold on to the money I decided to look for something that suited the life I wanted and during that process I was forced out of the truck and lost my license but at the same time I had an offer to put some of my items into a store and honestly taking that leap of faith excited and scared me at the same time but I decided to trust him so that is what I am doing.
