We recently connected with Nkem Oji-Alala and have shared our conversation below.
Nkem, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I built Paramount BPO after seeing a consistent gap—global companies wanted to enter Nigeria, but lacked a reliable way to execute locally.
At the same time, there was strong, underutilized talent in Nigeria.
So the opportunity was clear: bridge that gap.
Paramount isn’t just a BPO—we’re a market-entry and execution partner that helps companies operate successfully in Nigeria.

Nkem, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m the CEO of Paramount BPO, where we help companies expand into Nigeria and operate effectively.
My background in consulting and technology exposed a major gap—companies had the interest to enter emerging markets, but lacked the structure and execution to do it successfully.
So we built Paramount as a market-entry and execution partner, not just a BPO—supporting everything from compliance and operations to AI-enabled workforce solutions.
What sets us apart is simple: we don’t just advise—we execute.
And what I’m most proud of is building a bridge between global businesses and real opportunities in Nigeria.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the idea that I had to do everything myself to ensure quality.
Early on, I was very hands-on—which helped set standards—but it also created bottlenecks and limited how fast we could grow.
The turning point came when I realized that building a company isn’t about being the best operator in every function—it’s about building systems and empowering people to execute at a high level without you.
So I had to shift from being deeply involved in everything to focusing on structure, process, and team development.
That change has been critical, because it’s what allows Paramount to scale and deliver consistently, not just depend on me.
Have you ever had to pivot?
One major pivot for me was shifting Paramount BPO from a traditional outsourcing model to a market-entry and execution partner.
Initially, we were positioned like many BPOs—focused on services like customer support and back-office operations. But I started noticing that our most valuable conversations weren’t about outsourcing—they were about how to actually operate in Nigeria.
Clients needed help with structure, compliance, hiring, and navigating the local environment—not just staffing.
So we made a deliberate shift: instead of competing as a low-cost service provider, we repositioned as a strategic partner that enables companies to enter and scale in Nigeria.
That pivot changed everything—from how we present ourselves to the type of clients we attract.
And it reinforced an important lesson for me:
your market will tell you where the real value is—if you’re paying attention.
