We recently connected with Nigel Marshall and have shared our conversation below.
Nigel, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents gave me a solid foundation and raised me right. We all have our struggles but my parents taught me how to be resilient in the face of them. They also taught me that family above all else is one of the most important things in life. They always knew I would find my own path to being someone great. Now having a beautiful baby girl of my own, she gave me purpose to keep fighting for my dreams and goals because I want to give her a life only people could dream of.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Nigel Tariq Marshall but in the entertainment business world I go by NigelTariq. I am the youngest of 6 children. I got into the music industry from watching so many greats around me thrive in it, one of those people being my uncle (Michael “Blue” Williams). Hearing stories and watching him work with groups like OutKast and individual artists like Ceelo Green, Sunshine Anderson and many other greats made me interested in the music business and how everything works. Growing up I was a dancer, some might even say I was really great at it but through my love of dance and music I found a love for DJing. I started DJing at 13/14 and through the years I’ve learned so much (I had a great mentor named DJ Liv), one of those being that there are steps to becoming great and I had to walk through each of those steps to get where I’m at today and earn the respect of other DJs who have paved the way. Having my own business now is truly a blessing because not only do I get booked to DJ major events, I also get the chance to work with some great artists. I have started writing and producing music again for some amazing and talented people, songs you guys will soon hear when they release.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Being able to connect with clients is super important to me. If there was ever an event that I was booked for I make sure to engage with everyone as early as possible. That’s while I’m unloading my equipment, setting up and so forth. I pride myself on great customer service and professionalism always and that to me is why I see a big uptick in recurring bookings through the same people and they also help me gain other bookings and connect me with people who might need my other services.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Rather than unlearn, I had to learn that not everyone will support you. The closest people around you could be the ones that want to see you fail the most and you just never see it because you are blinded by the love and respect you have for so many.
I’ve had people in my life tell me time and time again how they love the work that I do but they never support.
I’ve had people in my life sabotage business opportunities because of jealousy.
