We recently connected with Niecey Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Niecey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
Family and Friends SHOCKINGLY are the least to support your business unfortunately. I’ve been in this business for a few years now and only a hand full of family members have supported me. They won’t even share a post and friends only support while it’s popular to support you, But i want to tell everyone, never let that stop you. Your success is not determined by the support of family and friends, as long as you believe in yourself and what you are doing and you put in the hard work, you’ll see results. Huge Thank you to all of my new friends/customers “DaShay Gang” they have given me every reason not to give up. They are the support.
Niecey, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My Name is JaNiece Davis, Also known as Niecey Boss or the famous nickname “CEO”. I am 30 years old and i own a flourishing Cosmetics Business. I started this brand to help my mother through her journey of breast cancer but also because it’s been a passion of mine since i was a little girl. Finding out my mother had breast cancer was hard to deal with i felt lost and confused at the thought that i could lose my mother when i needed her the most, but it also gave me the push i needed to take those leaps of faith. My mother is the epitome of strong and i thank her for her constant support and help in making my dreams come true.
In this line of business you have to have creativity and originality, you just have to. Trends move on so fast you have to be able to keep up. What sets me aside from everyone else is my imagination of what could be and my dedication to making it reality. I believe my customers enjoy that the most. One of my customers asked me “did you really make a glow in the dark lipgloss” lol yes i did. I had a vision beyond the basics and i set out to do something no one would think of. That excitement that’s what keeps us going.
I’m most proud of my strength to keep going. The market for lipgloss and cosmetics fluctuates so much, especially once Covid hit and everyone had to save money we took a hit. No one has the extra money for lipgloss , they’re all trying to buy toilet paper. But standing strong through the struggles that’s what I’m most proud of because through every obstacle, we’re still here, still growing, still providing top of the line cosmetics.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the “spend it and make it back” attitude. In the beginning i made a lot of money i probably should have saved and i didn’t, i spent it all because i had the mindset that “I’ll just make it back”. That wasn’t smart. If there’s one main thing I’d do differently it’s definitely that. I’d do more investing and saving instead of splurging.
Any advice for managing a team?
I have one of the best if not the best Brand Ambassador team. Though it constantly changes , there are a few that stand strong and have been with me for years. I can’t say i have much advice on managing a team because i still struggle myself from time to time and I’m also still learning, but if i had to give any it would be remove what’s not beneficial and communicate with your team. That communication is everything, the people on my team are human and they have bad days too and that’s something I’m always understand of, and speaking of them i would love to shout them out individually to give them their flowers as well for all they do.
