We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nick Jonesy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nick , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Once I became serious about music I wanted to make music projects with themes. I have a mixtape series called “Loading Screens(1 & 2)” which is a lofi project. Those songs tend to be more of a snap shot of how I’m feeling DURING the creative process. I have a full length EP/album out called “up past 1am”. My next full project will have a “2” in it to show its the next big project. “up past 1am” was the title of the project because most of the songs (if not all) were written late at night usually past 1am. I try to make sure every project I do has a meaning behind it. Otherwise, what’s the point?

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well, my name is Nick Jonesy. I’m an independent music artist/writer. I write my own songs and I also write for other people! When I’m working with other artists I tend to want to catch their vibe and get to know them so when I write for them it doesn’t sound like it’s just my words coming out of them. I want them to feel connected to the song as well that way it will sound even better. When it comes to writing for myself, it’s the opposite. I know how I feel, but the goal is to get the listener to find something they can relate to in the song. It can be a word, a phrase, a feeling, anything. There’s two songs that I’ve done that people seem to really connect to whenever I perform it. “twothousandone” and “mood rn”, both of which are on Loading Screens 1 & 2. Those two songs really just lay it all out there and it’s really somber and quiet, if that makes sense. I think I’m most proud of those two songs.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Sounds corny but I just hated feeling like I was alone with my thoughts. as if I was the only one thinking the way I did. Music artists saved my life. If I can reach people the same way my inspirations reached me then everything I’ve been through would’ve been worth it.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Go to their shows, promote their music, buy their merch! A music artist is usually the financial nucleus to all their endeavors. They usually pay their band for shows, directors and video staff for shooting. It’s an expensive job if you’re doing it all yourself. Also, more genuine collaboration between creatives would be great too. Too many people want to only work with already established people while ignoring the lesser known dope artists.
