We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicholas Hicks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nicholas thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
People you associate yourself with potentially will be where you end up. You can’t go into business not believing in what you’re doing as well as not believing in the people around you. I started selling clothes off the bus and now we’re in several skate shops. So I had to deal with a lot trials and tribulations. If the people around you don’t believe in themselves and the same vision it will bring you down. I believe in God and that Jesus died for my sins so my faith is a major part of how I got thru every tough business battle. God kept me going! The Bible taught me how to be generous, kind, and loving to people that I built great connections for my business. I thank God everyday for his wisdom.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Ever since I was 12 I used to play around with fabric and my moms sewing kit. Transitioning from middle school to high school I would ripped my jeans and stitch them back up to make a unique wear and tear look. People liked it and asked me to do the same thing on their jeans. This is when I realized people like some part of my creativeness. Growing in a home of faith it taught me nothing was more important than my faith in Jesus Christ. It wasn’t until 2017 is when I began brainstorming on making my own street wear brand with a powerful message. I would take the bus to get samples from shops and deliver product. Until my first pop up in 2018 is when I had a massive sell out and make a good lump sum of money. That’s when it began with street wear clothing stores and skate shops started reaching out for product.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
By building a community that is behind the your product or craft! Me having a clothing/skateboard brand means a lot to the skate culture but only if you keep them involved in it. Build a strong relationship with the culture behind the product or craft. Every craft or business has history and a problem to solve. Around those issues, situations, and the problem solving is a group of individuals that represent that business or craft. Find these individuals and build a community with them.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
For me it started with just a simple 9-5 job. Yes you can get a line of credit or a loan from someone, but the best way for me was just raising my own capital and investing back into myself the business. As I began to build traction with sales I began reaching out to partners that can share the investment along with profits.
