We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nerly Fertil a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Nerly , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.

I would say that all of my projects are meaningful but the most recent meaningful project is a song called “Before I Fall”. It’s written by the featured artist, Stella. It’s meaningful to me because It’s my first female collaboration and the first time I’ve released a song that I didn’t write. Also, the message of the song is about my season in life. The process was long and challenging but after all the studio sessions, planning and even the lack of confidence in myself, we released something beautiful.

Nerly , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am a singer-songwriter from Miami Florida. I’ve been singing since I was five years old. I remember singing to my family and teachers at a very young age and in the third grade I started writing songs. My singing and music are influenced by amazing R&B and gospel singers from today and the past. I grew up in the musical household and I look forward to writing new music that have positive messages, more collaborations, and setting new goals for myself.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.

I think non-creatives will struggle to understand that our work and our projects may seem like just hobbies or a waste of time or money but it’s a part of who we are as creatives. Every lyric and every note comes from inside of us. We get a chance to express ourselves and tell a story that you can relate to on a good day or bad day. Again, it’s more than some thing we do it’s part of who we are and what we love.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

Seeing my work out and being heard by hundreds and thousands of people is surreal. Just hearing the words on the pages of my notebook being brought to life with rhythms, notes, and voices is rewarding.
