We recently connected with Neffy Raps and have shared our conversation below.
Neffy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
One of the biggest risks I have taken was in August 2018. At the time I was living in a small studio apartment in Baltimore City, and honestly, I hated that place! I was making a name for myself as a rising local star. I had met the who’s who’s, hosted a live TV show, and had my song on the radio. Even after all of that, I felt like I was hitting a plateau. I wasn’t there. I hadn’t really made it yet. Personal life wasn’t great at the time either. Me and my family weren’t on great terms and I desperately needed a change in my life. I started saving my money and I came up with a plan to leave. I packed up everything that I owned into my car and drove over 1300 miles from Maryland to Texas. At that very moment I had left behind my entire family, my friends, and everything that I ever knew. It was time for me to explore what’s out there and follow my dreams. It was time to make a name for myself in the world, not just in my home town. I didn’t know what I was going to do or how things were going to go, but I knew I was going to make it work.
Once I got to Texas, I immediately began to go to every music and entertainment event I could find. I would perform at open mics, do press, anything I could do to let people know who I was. It felt like I was starting all over again, but I knew it was needed to get my name out there in a new city. While doing press, I met a program director of a local Dallas radio station who saw something special in me. He gave me a shot at doing radio. Within 2 months of moving to Dallas, I started my own podcast, The Vibe Session with NeffyRaps. A few months after that, I got a call to go on tour with Ja Rule in early 2019. Between the radio show and the tour, things were looking up. I was starting to feel like I made the right choice.
Flash forward to 2020, my podcast had featured hundreds of guests, from independent artists, to celebs and influencers. I had many collaborations and offers that expanded my brand. My music career also reached new heights. I had landed music placements on TV and acting gigs. I also started to curate major concerts in and around Dallas.
I had transitioned from being just an artist to a brand. With everything that I had learned through my journey. I decided to open my company Major Zone Music. I wanted to use my years of knowledge and connections to help other independent artists like me navigate their way through and find success, like I did. I went from being the new girl in a new city to making a living doing what I love and helping others all over the country do the same. All because I took a risk, believed in myself, and made it happen. Was it easy? Of course not. You still have those days. But when you do, you brush yourself off and try again the next day.

Neffy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My company Major Zone Music is a digital hub that offers services for artists, creators, and entertainers to expand their brands. We live in a digital world where success in this market heavily relies on the power of your brand and your digital presence. Artists are more in-control of their brands now more than ever. All development needs, whether it be PR, content design, placements, touring, releases, etcetera are provided under Major Zone Music. We take pride in the work that we do. It is a feeling like no other to be able to move the culture in a way that is impactful and that shapes the lives of the next wave of superstars.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Often times non-creatives struggle to understand that creatives are driven by passion. Our ideas may not always seem logical, we may not always make sense to you, but what we do gives us purpose. To some of us, purpose is our reason to live. One time I heard someone say, God gave your vision to YOU so how can you expect anyone else to see it? I carried that with me from that moment on. And now, it doesn’t matter who gets it. What matters is that I’m doing what I know I’m here to do, which is create.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to continue to blaze my own path and break down societal norms and stereotypes for women in entertainment.
