We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nathaniel Bryan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nathaniel below.
Nathaniel, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Six years ago, I took one of the biggest risks of my life. I left a comfortable, stable job and an easy, familiar city to move to a place I knew very little about for a career opportunity that came with absolutely no guarantees. Looking back now, it seems like an obvious decision, but at the time, it was anything but easy.
At the time, I had been working for the State of Georgia as a Recreation Director at a Juvenile Detention Center for 15 years. I had built a career there. I knew my responsibilities, my coworkers, and what each day would bring. I had job security, a steady paycheck, benefits, and the comfort that comes with familiarity. Many people spend their entire careers searching for that kind of stability.
What made the decision so difficult was that I genuinely loved aspects of my job. I had the opportunity to work with young people who often came from challenging circumstances. That work was personal to me because I didn’t come from a privileged background myself. I understood what it felt like to face obstacles and uncertainty. Being able to mentor, encourage, and serve as a positive influence for those youth was incredibly rewarding. I wanted them to see that their circumstances did not have to determine their future.
Those 15 years taught me lessons that continue to guide me today. The job taught me patience in situations where emotions ran high. It taught me how to remain calm when everything around me seemed to be falling apart. Most importantly, it taught me to trust myself and my ability to navigate difficult situations. Working in an environment where you often have to make decisions under pressure develops a level of resilience that cannot be learned from a book.
Despite the stability and fulfillment the job provided, I began to feel that I was standing at a fork in the road. On one side was comfort, security, and predictability. On the other side was uncertainty, growth, and the possibility of becoming something more than I currently was. Deep down, I knew that if I chose comfort simply because it was safe, I would always wonder what could have been.
When the opportunity arose to pursue a career in personal training, I felt strongly that I was being called to step outside of my comfort zone, trust God’s direction for my life, and take a leap of faith. However, that didn’t mean I wasn’t afraid.
In fact, I almost turned the opportunity down.
The uncertainty surrounding the move was overwhelming. I questioned everything. Would I be able to support myself financially? Would I succeed in a completely different industry? Was I making a mistake by leaving a secure government position after 15 years? On top of that, I had concerns about living arrangements, relocating to a place I knew little about, and starting over from scratch. The more I thought about it, the more reasons I could find to stay where I was.
What made the decision even riskier was the nature of the fitness industry. As a personal trainer in a large commercial gym, success is not guaranteed. If you don’t have clients, you don’t earn income. Unlike my previous position, there was no safety net. There was no guaranteed paycheck waiting for me every two weeks. Everything depended on my ability to build relationships, earn trust, attract clients, and consistently deliver results.
That reality made me incredibly apprehensive.
But throughout my life, I have always been driven by the desire to prove to myself that I am capable of more than I think. Growing up, I learned that growth rarely happens when things are easy. The moments that shaped me most were the ones that challenged me. As frightening as the decision was, I knew I would regret allowing fear to make it for me.
So I packed my stuff, said goodbye to everything familiar, and moved.
The first few months required faith, persistence, and resilience. I had to build a client base, establish myself in a new environment, and learn how to thrive in a profession where results matter and trust must be earned every day. There were moments of doubt, but each challenge reinforced that I had made the right decision.
Today, I can honestly say that taking that risk changed my life. Not only have I built a successful career helping people transform their health and confidence, but I have also grown tremendously as a person. The experiences, opportunities, relationships, and personal development that have come from that decision are things I could never have imagined while sitting comfortably in my old job six years ago.
Most importantly, the experience taught me that courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward despite fear because you believe there is something greater waiting on the other side. Had I chosen comfort, I would have remained safe, but I would never have discovered what I was truly capable of achieving.
The risk paid off in ways that went far beyond financial success. It gave me confidence, strengthened my faith, and showed me that sometimes the greatest opportunities in life are found just outside the boundaries of our comfort zone. Looking back, leaving behind what was familiar was one of the hardest decisions I have ever made, but it was also one of the best.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Nathaniel “Tony” Bryan, and I’m originally from Charleston, South Carolina—a proud Geechee Boi at heart. I’m the oldest of two, and family means everything to me. As crazy as they can be sometimes, I love them dearly and am incredibly proud of them. They played a major role in shaping the man I am today, and they’re one of the biggest reasons I work as hard as I do. Everything I strive for is bigger than me; it’s about creating a legacy and making the people I love proud.
My fitness journey wasn’t something I originally planned. After my college basketball career came to an end, I found myself searching for something that could fill the competitive void that sports had left behind. That’s when I discovered powerlifting. What started as a way to stay competitive quickly became a passion. I was fascinated by how my body transformed through consistent training, and I became increasingly interested in the science behind strength development, muscle growth, nutrition, and overall physical performance.
Looking back, that leap of faith reinforced a lesson that now drives both my life and my coaching philosophy: real growth begins when you’re willing to embrace discomfort.
Today, I’m a certified personal trainer, but I don’t simply provide workouts…I provide RESULTS.
Most people think personal training is about helping someone lose weight, build muscle, or get stronger. Those things matter, but they’re only part of the transformation. What truly excites me is helping people change the way they see themselves. Physical transformation is powerful, but mental transformation is life-changing.
One of the most rewarding experiences for me is working with someone who initially doubts themselves. Maybe they think they’re too old, too overweight, too weak, or simply incapable of achieving their goals. Then, over time, I watch that same person begin to believe in themselves. The moment they walk up to a barbell or pick up a weight they once thought was impossible and confidently say, “I’ve got this,” is something I’ll never get tired of seeing.
That’s what sets me apart. I focus on building confidence as much as I focus on building muscle. My clients don’t just leave stronger physically—they leave stronger mentally. They learn that the limits they placed on themselves were often self-imposed, and once they break through those barriers, their entire perspective changes.
I work with people from all walks of life, from beginners stepping into a gym for the first time to experienced individuals looking to push beyond plateaus. My coaching combines strength training, fat loss, muscle-building strategies, accountability, and mindset development. I believe success comes from consistency, discipline, and a willingness to do the hard things long enough to see RESULTS.
What I’m most proud of isn’t the amount of weight my clients lose or the records they set in the gym. It’s the confidence they gain. It’s watching someone who once doubted themselves become someone who carries themselves differently, speaks differently, and approaches life with a new sense of belief.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and my brand, it’s that I genuinely care about helping others become the strongest version of themselves. My mission isn’t simply to help people look better—it’s to help them discover what they’re truly capable of. Fitness is just the vehicle. The real transformation happens in the mind.
My own life has been shaped by taking risks, embracing challenges, and refusing to settle for comfort. That’s the same mindset I bring to every client I work with. I want people to understand that they are capable of far more than they think they are. Sometimes all it takes is the right coach, the right support system, and the willingness to take that first step.
Because at the end of the day, the greatest transformation isn’t changing your body…it’s changing what you believe is possible.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe a couple of things have helped me build my reputation within my market.
First, I’ve remained the same person and the same coach from day one. Success hasn’t changed me. Growth hasn’t changed me. The standards I had when I first started are the same standards I have today. My clients know exactly what they’re getting when they work with me…honesty, accountability, and effort.
I hate excuses. I’m not the coach who’s going to tell you what you want to hear just to make you feel comfortable. I’m going to tell you what you need to hear to get results. I’ll celebrate every win, no matter how big or small, because progress deserves recognition. At the same time, I’m going to point out areas that need improvement because that’s how we continue to grow and get better.
I demand the best from my clients because I genuinely believe they’re capable of more than they think. In return, I expect my clients to demand my very best as well. They’re investing their hard-earned money, trusting me with their goals, their health, and their time. That’s not something I take lightly. When someone chooses me as their coach, they’re going to get my full effort, my knowledge, my energy, and my commitment every single session.
There are no exceptions and no excuses. My name is attached to every client I work with, and I take tremendous pride in that. I refuse to have my name associated with mediocrity, shortcuts, or anything less than excellence. My reputation has been built on consistency, results, and genuinely caring about the people I serve. When my clients succeed, we succeed together.
At the end of the day, people know that what they see is what they get with me. I’m going to challenge you, support you, hold you accountable, and push you beyond what you thought was possible. I believe that authenticity, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to excellence are the biggest reasons I’ve earned the reputation I have today.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Keeping God first. Nothing is possible without Him. Every day, I thank Him for allowing me to do something that I absolutely love and enjoy. This profession has blessed me with the opportunity to impact people’s lives, and I never take that for granted.
Secondly, I believe you have to actually know what the hell you’re doing. Personal training isn’t just about putting someone on a machine, telling them to do 12 reps, and then moving them to another machine. It’s about learning each person you train. It’s understanding their strengths, weaknesses, limitations, goals, and how they move. Then it’s helping them move better, get stronger, and become healthier.
There are far too many “trainers” today who base their entire approach on what they see on social media instead of learning the fundamentals of exercise science, muscle building, movement mechanics, recovery, and nutrition. Trends come and go, but the basics will always matter. The more knowledge you have, the more people you can help.
I also believe confidence is essential in this field. Not arrogance, but confidence. I truly believe I can train anyone because I trust my knowledge, my experience, and my ability to meet people where they are. Every client is different, and having confidence in what you bring to the table allows you to solve problems and deliver results.
Communication is a skill that often gets overlooked. You have to be able to meet people where they are, understand their goals, listen to their concerns, and communicate in a way that motivates them to take action. The best coaches know how to connect with people from all walks of life and help them believe they can accomplish things they never thought possible.
Lastly, it’s not about the money. Don’t get me wrong…we should be compensated well for the value we provide, the problems we solve, and the RESULTS we help people achieve. But if money is your primary motivation, you’ll burn out quickly in this profession. The real reward comes from helping another human being become a better version of themselves. Watching someone gain confidence, improve their health, overcome obstacles, and accomplish goals they once thought were impossible—that’s what makes this work special.
When you put God first, continue learning, stay confident in your abilities, and genuinely care about helping people, success in this industry becomes much more than a paycheck. It becomes a purpose.
