We were lucky to catch up with Nathan Jackman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Nathan , appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
The thing that kick-started the idea of Pyvott . . . what it currently is, and what it will be, was when my brother, Josh, wanted to buy a pair of shoes but was having struggles getting the purchasing to work on one of the current social media sites. Both Josh, myself and the others on our founding team are all quite entrepreneurial in nature – many of us already running established businesses and well on our way through the entrepreneurial path. It was pretty common for us to talk about different business opportunities and talk about things we could do in different industries. When we had those simple discussions here and there about things in social media, we talked about issues such as lack of privacy, lack of customization, and heavy focus on ads instead of true content. And yes, the struggles of not being able to buy shoes as easily as we’d like!
After further discussion and ideation, Clayton, another founder on our team, reached out to his brother who was a software developer to see what it would take to develop an app in the social media sphere. We didn’t really know where to begin other than we knew we’d need developers. After over a year researching, brainstorming, and finding the right team members, we were ready to move forward with the first phase of app development. Only problem was . . . we didn’t have enough capital.
We reached out to a few close friends and family, and with their investments, we were able to close the gap of what we had monetarily with what we needed to get things moving. With that first round of capital raised, we went through a design stage with our developers and built many mockups of how we wanted Pyvott to look and function. A big focus for us during this first phase of development was keeping the platform clean and content-focused. Phase one of development lasted about a year and a half. We were heavily focused on getting the app in a place that was usable and ready to launch on the app store. We were very excited when we moved forward with our soft launch of the app in September 2021.
There’s no question that many people have tons of amazing ideas. The world has no shortage of ideas – things that could improve science, technology, manufacturing, health, and much more in huge ways. For a variety of reasons though, there’s also no question that only a fraction of those great ideas are actually executed. I’m very grateful and excited for the opportunity we’ve had to work with such great people and a great team to execute our idea and make Pyvott a reality.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve had an entrepreneurial mindset for a very long time. I always wanted to be my own boss. The thought of working for someone else was never really enticing to me. I started my first business, Premier Detail, when I was 17. It’s a mobile auto detailing business servicing the Salt Lake and Utah County areas here in Utah. When I first started Premier Detail, I had no idea it would be preparing me to join in the creation of Pyvott, a technology company in the social media industry. Growing Premier Detail gave me experience in marketing, advertising, content creation and many other lanes of business. As a small business owner moving into building a new social media platform, I now have the opportunity to build a platform that can benefit other small business owners and provide a great experience for all our users. With the insights I gained with my previous work and with Josh, Clayton, and our team bringing their skills to the table, I’m confident we’ll be able to create something that is unique and beneficial to people around the world.
Pyvott is a tech/manufacturing company. We currently have three main divisions – Pyvott (the social media app), Pyvott Pathway (a division that exists to support creators online), and Utah Manufacturing (a division to manufacture products such as health supplements and nutraceuticals initially, and other industries in the future). These three divisions work together cohesively to support all users (general users, businesses, creators, etc.)
2022 was a big year for Pyvott. This past year, we were heavily focused on our manufacturing division. We secured a 55,000 sqft building and have been building that out all year. It’s almost complete and will be our new headquarters. We’ll soon be up and running and ready to start production.
With the completion of our new headquarters, we’re excited for our app division to resume development. We’re focused on creating a beautiful, new, and fully customizable social media platform where users are in full control of what they see. We’re very excited to continue development and enhance our core differentiators – custom feeds and the Content Curator where users can choose the media type they want to view and how they want to view it. We’re still very early in our development and excited for what’s to come for the Pyvott app.
I’m very proud of our team. Each member works very hard in their roles to progress the overall growth of Pyvott. I feel each team member is in the right role where they excel in their work. I’m excited for all the great things we’re going to accomplish in 2023!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots we made happened after phase one of app development and our soft launch. We were going to proceed with phase two of development but decided to pause on that while we moved forward with building our manufacturing arm. Building this division of the business will allow us to be self-sustaining sooner as we continue to build and grow the rest of the company. Although we paused on app development and moved forward in building the manufacturing division earlier than originally planned, it’s been very exciting to watch the growth and I think we made the right choice to build that out first. This will help us be better prepared financially for further growth of all Pyvott divisions.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
This is something we’re very excited for at Pyvott. We’re building the Pyvott social platform in multiple phases. Our initial phases lean heavily towards building the core social piece where users can connect in ways that aren’t currently available. We’ll be refining and building our custom feeds and refining our curator which really allows our users to choose what they see, both in the content type but also the media type.
Other platforms have introduced shopping in their apps. However, we believe that if executed properly we’ll be able to provide a higher quality and more unique experience for people who want the ease of shopping while using social media. Social shopping right now is somewhat clunky, so we’re excited to make it a beautiful experience. We’ll be providing our users with a seamless, quick, and easy shopping experience that’s unlike anything currently on the market. I’d love to go into more detail, but as we’re still early in our development phase we’re keeping information on this topic relatively quiet for the time being. But keep an eye out, cause it’s going to be pretty awesome!
