We were lucky to catch up with Natasha Herbert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Natasha thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Gratefully, I have been able to earn a full-time living doing photography. It wasn’t easy and I know every journey is unique. I worked a full-time 9-5 job all while doing my side hustle. Having to balance both was very difficult. After having a conversation with one of my co-workers he told me about a book called “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” I didn’t have to read the book to understand that it was time for me to dive into my passion. The following day I put in my 2 week notice and I dove into my photography career. I was very intentional with my steps and made sure I created a Roth IRA to continue to build wealth and I started saving and investing.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
While some attend schools to learn a trade, others are born with a natural ability to do it. We refer to the latter as true artists. Natasha Lehuanani Herbert is a true artist. Her young life spent drawing as an escape from a troubled childhood progressed into a passion for creation. The need to actualize her artistic desires led her to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Digital Media from Michigan State University and a plethora of awe-inspiring freelance work. Shortly after graduating, she came back to her hometown of Cleveland to purpose her photography career. Little did she know it would take off literally landing her in gigs internationally.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about financial literacy. I grew up in a low-income based family and we didn’t acquire the skills or even learn about how to make money work with you until later in life. I believe that anyone can benefit from learning how to create wealth and how it can impact our any journey whether creative or not. I believe in smart investment plans and making sure that we can create the life we desire.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is the responses I receive after the client has seen the work. I’m a photographer so the client is viewing everything through my own eyes. I think its a very satisfying feeling knowing that you created something that they will cherish.
