We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Naomi Ortiz Despiau . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Naomi below.
Naomi , appreciate you joining us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
When I started up, my best friends were the first to order from. Me! They all pay for their treats. It was so slow one week that I did not have a customer, but they all ordered from me with no questions asked and referred me to other people who are now customers. They knew my business needed it, and they took the extra step to help. Plus, I always give them my trials for free, too, but they never want them for free THEY are always paying. They never order without paying. That means the world to me, and that says a lot about the way they love me. Thank you for this kind of customer and those who gave me a chance when I opened up my business and did not care how it looked; they wanted to support and help me! Thank you!! My customers are the best!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
When I was little, I always loved baking always was interested when my mom was baking or my grandma. I did not put a lot of thought over the years, but when I had my daughter, I decided to start doing small things with her, which is why we are here. She asked me one day, “mom, why don’t you open a bakery, and when I get older, I’ll take care of it?” I took the leap of faith, and I’m here with a business with a daughter that loves to eat all the treats instead of helping because she is so tired. Plus, God did what he needed to do so I could be out there blessing and assisting people too that can’t afford a birthday cake.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Consistency and Honesty. If I can’t do something, I will not lie to get the day booked or money. I don’t particularly appreciate giving customers mediocre work. I believe if I buy something and I can’t make it perfect, then I have to have the exact expectations when I sell my treats. I started to take classes for my sugar cookies with Velma, a local sugar cookie baker (CookieGram) who competed in the food network. With her, I learned so much, and she showed me never to give up because people out there are watching no matter what. I’m thankful for all the opportunities, and I don’t see anyone like my competition. I want to help and show them we can make it out there!

We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
Yes, my business partner is the future owner of Sunflour Street Treats. She is my 6-year-old daughter, the face of my business. She is a miracle that came through, and God blessed me with it. So now, she helps with little things, but I know that when she gets older, she might be more interested. Faith, Love and God build this Business.
