We were lucky to catch up with Nanwei Cai recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nanwei, thanks for joining us today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
The most innovative work I’ve done lies in the field of emerging technology design, especially with Artificial Intelligence. Across both digital and physical forms, I’ve been dedicated to pushing the boundaries of human-AI interaction, making an impact across various domains—whether transforming complex data engineering workflows in enterprise production environments across industries, enhancing art and cultural engagement in museums, or fostering emotional connections with everyday objects.
In the enterprise software space, I craft AI-powered, no-code data engineering platforms at Palantir Technologies, making complex data workflows more intuitive and accessible. My design contributions have driven multiple patented innovations, with deployed systems currently enabling organizations to build production-grade data pipelines with governance, security, and AI-powered automation.
Another milestone is Easel, an AI-powered museum app that personalizes art experiences through generative AI and augmented reality (AR), making art more accessible and engaging. Recognized with prestigious awards like the MUSE Creative Awards and London Design Awards, Easel demonstrates how AI can revolutionize cultural experiences.
One of my most forward-thinking projects is Artificial Intimacy, which reimagines how everyday objects can interact with people in unpredictable, expressive ways through their unique animated attributes. By designing AI-driven expressiveness in physical objects, it provokes new ways of thinking about human-AI interactions and relationships beyond mere utility.
From transforming enterprise production workflows with AI to humanizing AI-driven interactions, my work continuously pushes the limits of technology—turning advanced, complex systems into intuitive, engaging, and emotionally resonant experiences.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a product designer based in New York City, passionate about designing at the intersection of AI, data, and interactive experiences. Currently, I design at Palantir Technologies, where I’m dedicated to driving user experience strategy and crafting AI-powered enterprise data tools that simplify complex data engineering workflows. I led UX efforts to scale the user base of Palantir’s flagship data engineering system, integrating AI features and contributing to multiple patents. The products I have designed are widely used by leading organizations across industries worldwide. My role bridges advanced technology like AI with user-centered design, ensuring powerful yet intuitive solutions that drive user value and business impact. Before Palantir, I designed at GE Appliances, optimizing UX for connected consumer products in GEA’s SmartHQ ecosystem. Throughout my career, I’ve been committed to advancing the intersection of design and technology, creating meaningful user experiences, and crafting intuitive and scalable solutions.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. My mission as a designer is to bridge the gap between emerging technology and human experience. Emerging technology like Artificial intelligence, Augmented reality, Internet of things are continuously evolving to be more powerful, but without thoughtful design, these tools can feel obscure and overwhelming, limited the access to users who may not have a technical background. By strategically integrating emerging technologies like AI, my goal is to making the interaction with these technological innovations feel effortless and natural, bridging the technological divide and deliver tangible value to users and business.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a designer is witnessing how people connect with and benefit from the products I create, and knowing that my work contributes to making the world a better place. On a small scale, it is fulfilling to see how my designs enable users to perform complex data integration that was previously impossible to them. On a larger scale, knowing that my designs are deployed in critical missions—such as finding missing children and combating child exploitation, accelerating clinical data delivery, and powering clinical outcomes for patients—reaffirms the profound impact of design and reinforces my passion for what I do.
At its core, great design is not just about what we create—it’s about the real-world impact it has on people, businesses, and society. Additionally, design offers me a unique lens through which I understand and shape the world. It also creates a collaborative space, allowing me to learn from engineers, domain experts, and users while aligning diverse perspectives.
