We recently connected with Nancy Nguyen and have shared our conversation below.
Nancy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
YES! I absolutely love being my own boss on most days, although there are moments it’s overwhelming but it’s part of it. My niche is in beauty, educating clients about treatments and making them feel better and confident again.
I don’t ever think of having a regular job. If I do, it definitely has to do with helping and serving people.
I find joy In volunteering, speaking at events sharing my experiences and hope I make an impact on a young woman that is scare to take action on her dreams.

Nancy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Not a lot of people know this, but I suffer from hair loss especially in my brows due to hypothyroidism. I filled in my brows at the age of 12, over the years I started wearing different styles.
Dark and thin to medium soft now.
At the age of 17, I enrolled in cosmetology school. I wasn’t interested in hair but I found myself shaping and waxing brows for classmates.
Finally at 23, I enrolled in a cosmetic tattoo class due to my client comment. Teresa asked what stencil I use for my brows and I told I free hand daily!
She advised me to get in cosmetic tattooing .
I just fell in love PMU, and how we can create something that is light or heavy. Today, I have over 20 years in the beauty industry and continue to grow and share my knowledge.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A few years ago, I had to close my second location, which was the academy. That’s where I taught PMU and inspire young women to practice the skill and eventually open their own business and be their own boss.
Overtime it affected mentally and eventually physically I had to take a step back. As I reflect on the situation, I end up downsizing. There was a point in my life that I had two location an online store. I was training student in person and a 9 staff . So I was very busy, where I did not have time for myself.
I pivot my life to just myself, and I rent the rooms at my salon. My life changed because I became a single mother with two kids therefore, I begin to think and be creative of what my passion was and what is it that I really want to do that will make it impact in my lifetime.
As I mentioned, my two kids are my world and I always tell them to follow their dreams and dream big. So now I have more time to think about what I really want and to take the next step to my passion which is helping people. Such as giving back to the community helping women and children’s and eventually start my own nonprofit.
As well as teaching my techniques in the beauty industry, speak at beauty schools and events and also work on my clients. Because they are the one who believed in me and always supported me when I started out in a small little wax room. Now I get to travel internationally and speak about my knowledge and experience..

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I believe when you have passion, you begin to get obsessed with growing and learning.
The most effective strategy growing, your clientele is being authentic, transparent and honest to yourself and to everyone. The best way to start is to work on yourself and practice your craft. It’s not about talent. It’s about discipline.
Once you have massive your craft, you work will show through on clients. My clients are my walking billboard and I get most clients from word-of-mouth. I do enjoy social media because I think it is a place for inspiration, knowledge, and just having fun. Having fun meaning that because I’m in the beauty industry it’s fun, unique it’s serious, but not too serious.
For me, it’s experienced my clients get when they’re on my table or in my classroom. For every client that is getting a treatment from me I am also teaching them about what I am doing, why I am doing it and they’re aftercare.
Best way to grow your clientele is to never stop learning to be on top of the game because the beauty industry is always evolving. And you must evolve with it as a trend change..
