We were lucky to catch up with Naliyah Hall recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Naliyah, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I took a major risk by shifting my career focus from fashion merchandising and design to graphic design and art direction. In the summer of 2023, while freelancing as a wardrobe stylist, I met a Cleveland-based music manager who asked if I knew how to design cover art and visual assets. Even though I didn’t have hands-on experience at the time, I decided to take the opportunity and design the project anyway. That decision pushed me into a field I hadn’t originally planned to pursue, but it ultimately led to meaningful success. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to creatively direct and design visual assets for artists and projects connected to labels such as Atlantic Records and 300 Entertainment, along with numerous independent artists. Taking that initial risk allowed me to build a career in an industry I’m truly passionate about, and it’s a decision I don’t regret.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi readers, my name is Naliyah Hall, also known as NALIGFX. I’m a graphic designer and creative director specializing in visual storytelling for music artists and entertainment brands. My work focus on cover art, rollout assets, and visual identities that helps artists translate their sound.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative and I would like to think it’s an unspoken part of the experience — is being able to listen to the unreleased music beforehand. It makes the project more personal between us as creatives and the artist. Hearing how much effort goes into the production of the music and having to convey that mood, vibe, and emotion into visuals is the most rewarding aspect. To all the artists who want a close professional relationship with their creative team, I recommend allowing them to preview your process as well.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. I’m striving to earn my first RIAA plaque for my participation in the creative design of a music project. I’m also looking forward to the possibility of one day receiving a Grammy nomination for my creative contributions. I believe we’ve made significant progress in recognizing the importance of creative direction and visual identity behind the music being made, and I look forward to being a part of that community.
