Alright, Nadia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?

As someone who has spent nearly 8 years immersed in the world of video editing, I vividly remember the day I first opened editing software with a sense of wonder and excitement. I believed that crafting compelling stories out of raw footage, accompanied by music and voiceovers, would be a breeze. However, my journey in video editing has taught me otherwise. Despite the advancements in software upgrades, I have encountered numerous unexpected challenges that have reshaped my perception of this craft. In this personal reflection, I delve into the hurdles I’ve faced throughout the years and the realization that video editing is far from an easy endeavor.

1. Technical Glitches:
From the early days of my editing journey to the present, technical glitches have been a constant presence. Software crashes, freezing screens, and compatibility issues have disrupted my workflow and tested my patience. Despite the upgrades and improvements in editing tools, unexpected glitches persist, reminding me of the importance of staying adaptable and honing my troubleshooting skills.
2. Format Compatibility:
The realm of video editing is home to a myriad of file formats, each with its own set of nuances. Early on, I discovered that not all formats are universally supported by editing software. This mismatch often led to frustrating moments of file import or export difficulties. Over time, I have become more adept at navigating the challenges of format compatibility, learning to convert files or seek alternative solutions to bridge the gap between creative vision and technical constraints.
3. Missing or Corrupt Files:
As I delved deeper into the editing process, I encountered the heart-sinking experience of missing or corrupt files. In the midst of transferring files between devices or storage mediums, valuable footage would inexplicably disappear or become unusable. These moments taught me the importance of maintaining meticulous backups, implementing reliable file transfer methods, and treating each file with care to prevent the devastating loss of crucial assets. I remember one time when I was assisting editor on a reality show pilot. As we delved into the project, I soon realized that one of the master hard drives, which contained crucial footage, was corrupted. It was an old drive that had not been thoroughly checked before its use. The consequences quickly became apparent—each time we opened Avid Media Composer for edits, the files would vanish one by one. Within seconds, the media in the project became offline. That was so crazy. Of course we didn’t have a back up. So we had to spend lots of money to restore most of the files. Now the lesson learned. Always check the files and drives!
4. Performance Issues:
Creating seamless visual experiences through video editing demands significant computing resources. However, inadequate hardware can lead to frustrating performance issues. Lag, slow rendering times, and dropped frames became recurring challenges. Recognizing the significance of investing in capable hardware and optimizing software settings, I began to take the necessary steps to ensure that my tools align with the demands of my creative process.
5. Color and Lighting Inconsistencies:
The world of video editing is not solely confined to manipulating footage but also to enhancing the visual narrative. Over time, I realized that achieving visual coherence across different clips is no easy feat. Color grading, white balance adjustments, and addressing lighting inconsistencies became crucial aspects of my work. I honed my skills in color correction and embraced the use of reference images to ensure a harmonious visual journey for the viewer.
6. Audio Problems:
Sound is a vital component of video editing, contributing to the overall impact of a project. Unexpected audio issues such as background noise, uneven levels, synchronization problems, or artifacts added another layer of complexity to my work. I delved into the intricacies of noise reduction techniques, meticulously adjusted audio levels, and learned the art of re-syncing audio tracks to ensure a rich and immersive audio experience for the audience.
7. Creative Blocks:
Despite my initial expectations of seamless creativity, I soon encountered creative blocks that tested my resolve. Organizing footage, selecting the most compelling shots, and effectively conveying narratives became moments of struggle. Embracing experimentation, seeking inspiration from other editors’ works, and engaging in collaborative endeavors have all played a pivotal role in reigniting my creative flame and overcoming the hurdles along the way.

My journey as a video editor has been a transformative one, filled with unexpected challenges that have reshaped my perception of this craft. While my initial enthusiasm may have been met with the realities of technical glitches, format compatibility issues, and other unexpected hurdles, I have come to embrace the dynamic nature of video editing. With each obstacle, I have grown more resilient, resourceful, and adaptable.

My name is Nadia Bokareva, and I am an experienced video editor residing in Brooklyn, New York. With over 8 years of professional experience in this field, I have cultivated a deep passion for the creative industry. Originally from Russia, I always dreamed of coming to the United States to immerse myself in the vibrant world of media. While I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, my true calling emerged when I realized my desire to explore the more artistic aspects of the field.

To pursue my passion, I traveled to London, UK, where I enrolled in the Filmmaking course at London Film Academy. It was during this time that I unequivocally realized my affinity for video editing. I returned to Moscow and further honed my skills by obtaining an associate degree in Film Editing. This transformative experience completely changed the trajectory of my life. Initially starting as an assistant editor, I diligently worked my way up to becoming a full-time video editor. I thrived in the demanding reality TV industry, taking on projects that ranged from comedy shows and stand-up performances to fashion and social dramas.

However, the landscape shifted dramatically when the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and like many others, I adapted to the remote freelance model. During this time, I had the pleasure of collaborating with numerous talented individuals, including a remarkable and highly acclaimed young director. Together, we embarked on an immersive summer filled with creating captivating short films, trailers, and other innovative video content. Eager to explore new opportunities, I joined Publicis Groupe, where I found my niche in the dynamic world of advertisement. Working with notable clients such as McDonald’s, Nestlé, Mondelēz, PepsiCo, Sanofi, Hasbro, and Visa, I contributed to a team that earned the esteemed Cannes Lions award for our outstanding work on a Hasbro promotion project. This invaluable experience not only broadened my skill set but also fueled my ambition to bring fresh creativity and expertise to future endeavors.

Motivated to break boundaries and seek new horizons, I made the bold decision to relocate to the United States. Recognizing the challenges that lay ahead as a foreigner in a new environment, I embraced the opportunity to showcase my talent and distinctive personality. As I navigate this exciting journey, I feel an incredible sense of inspiration and determination. The vast potential and endless possibilities that lie before me as a creative mind are exhilarating, and I am fully committed to harnessing these opportunities.

At the moment I work as an editor in collaboration with incredible Grace Wells known for her amazing tabletop commercials in social media. She’s preparing a new project and I’m happy to be a part of it. That’s my story and I believe it’s only the beginning.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?

As a video editor, there are a bunch of resources I wish I knew about earlier in my creative journey. Here are a few examples:

1. Online Learning Platforms: Websites like Udemy, Lynda, and Skillshare have tons of video editing courses taught by pros in the biz. They’ll teach you all the cool software tricks, techniques, and creative stuff. Seriously, these platforms are a goldmine for learning.
2. Keyboard Shortcut Cheat Sheets: Want to be a speedy editor? Memorize those keyboard shortcuts, my friend! You can find cheat sheets for Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and more online. Trust me, knowing those shortcuts will save you a ton of time and make you look like a pro.
3. Online Communities and Forums: Hang out with fellow video editors in online communities like Reddit, Creative COW, or the Adobe Community Forums. You can ask questions, get feedback, and learn from their experiences. It’s like having a bunch of buddies who’ve got your back and can help you out.
4. Online Video Editing Tutorials and YouTube Channels: YouTube is your go-to for awesome video editing tutorials. Channels like Film Riot, Premiere Gal, Justin Odisho and Peter McKinnon spill the beans on all the cool editing tricks, software hacks, and creative ideas.

Obviously, I knew some of them but 8 years ago I didn’t think that those things can be so handy in my working routine.

Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)

As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have gained popularity as a unique digital asset that can represent ownership or provenance of a specific item, such as artwork, collectibles, or even digital media like videos. I think NFTs have potential applications across various industries, including video editing.

And I can share some potential advantages of NFTs to video editors:

1. Proof of Authenticity: NFTs can establish the authenticity and ownership of a particular video or video edit. By minting an NFT for a video project, a video editor can provide proof that their work is original and officially recognized on the blockchain. This can be valuable when it comes to copyright claims and protecting intellectual property.
2. Monetization Opportunities: NFTs offer the possibility of monetizing video editing skills and creations directly. Video editors can sell their work as limited edition or one-of-a-kind NFTs, allowing them to retain a higher share of the proceeds compared to traditional methods. Additionally, if the video gains popularity or is resold in the future, the original creator can receive royalties automatically through smart contracts embedded in the NFT.
3. Enhanced Attribution and Credit: NFTs can enable proper attribution and credit for video editors. By linking their name or digital signature to an NFT, video editors can ensure that their contributions are recognized and acknowledged whenever the NFT is transferred or displayed. This can help build a reputation and open up new opportunities in the industry.
4. Tokenized Collaboration: NFTs can facilitate collaborative video editing projects by tokenizing specific contributions or segments within a larger video. I’m not sure if I’d get involved into NFT world in the closest future but I think that for some individuals it can be a good opportunity to create something unique.
