We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful MYRANDAS. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with MYRANDAS below.
MYRANDAS, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Our journey has been an extraordinary adventure marked by a willingness to take risks, starting with the hard decision to leave our hometowns. It takes courage to leave everything you know behind and a belief in the potential rewards that lie beyond your comfort zone. We miss our families and friends in Moscow and Havana, but we are fortunate that they encouraged us to follow our dreams. We started out as a rock band in Cuba and wanted to be here, where so many of our favorite bands and artists began their journeys. We knew LA was the right place for us.
Another bold decision was to push the boundaries of our creative expression in 2022. Coming out of the pandemic, we wanted to do something completely different and create music that would make people dance and have fun. Navigating the transition from our established identity as a rock band to diving into the Latin urban genre was a daring move, a risk we willingly embraced. We didn’t know how the public would react to our new sound, but it has been an amazing journey. Not only have our listeners loved it, but we have received so much support from people all over the world. This year, we released our debut Latin single ‘Cuando Te Vi’ and ‘Con Una Flor’, which received support from publications such as Hola! USA, Lefuturewave, Voyage LA, End Sessions, Freim TV, and more. In addition, our upcoming single ‘Cuentale’ has become one of the main soundtracks in the Cuban telenovela ‘Viceversa,’ which just premiered on TV.
MYRANDAS, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Our project got its start in Havana. It was founded by a musician/ Grammy award-winning engineer, Marciel Miranda, and myself, a trilingual singer of Armenian origin, Kristina Miranda. I first traveled to Cuba in 2009 to work on my solo album. Marciel and I met in the recording studio and immediately felt this incredible connection. As a result, I moved to Havana in 2010, and we began writing songs together for our new band, then known as High Grass. Cuba is a unique place with amazing people and many challenges. Our music was influenced by our experiences, from living on the island to moving to the United States, and it also touched on various social issues. After presenting our work on radio and television and receiving a nomination for Best Rock Band at the Cuerda Viva Awards, we decided to explore opportunities overseas.
In 2016, we relocated to Los Angeles. Since then, we’ve been on a continuous journey of growth and artistic evolution, performing at LA venues and participating in local festivals. In 2020, we started raising awareness about the situation in Cuba through our music. We released our singles “90 Miles” and “Home,” results of collaborations with remarkable talents such as Grammy-winning producer Jacquire King and musicians Matt Bissonette (Elton John, Ringo Starr) and Christian Paschall (Maren Morris, David Crowder).
During the pandemic, we also started experimenting with our sound and listening to a lot of Latin urban music. Drawing inspiration from artists like Rosalía, Bomba Estéreo, and Bad Bunny, we decided to follow our gut and delve into the genre. Embracing Latin culture in our new music, we changed the name of our project to MYRANDAS and introduced it to audiences at NextFest 2022 alongside Cuban-Puerto Rican percussionist Richard Herrera. We have performed as a trio at festivals and popular tropical, dance, and Afro-Latin music events around LA, including the renowned Subsuelo Sundays and La Junta.
Recently, we released the music video for our new single, ‘Con Una Flor,’ filmed by our dear friend, the talented Adan Alonso, and we can’t wait to share more music with you in January.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
We believe that music has this unique ability to bring people together and create meaningful change. Using art to bring joy or raise awareness is a powerful form of communication that reaches deep. It matters, and it can be a life-changer. Our mission is simple: spread love.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It is the ability to connect with people on a deep and emotional level. Whether it’s through songs, visuals, or shows, the joy comes from knowing that something we create has the power to inspire or resonate with others. Witnessing the impact of our work and being part of a shared experience is truly fulfilling.
