We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MSKING a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
MSKING, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
There have been times where our work has been misunderstood and mischaracterized in our local scene because of our music style. Starting out in 2019, our introduction to the scene was originally categorized by our audience as indie rock and shoe gaze. In 2020 we came out with our EP “The Maelstrom”, which was much more angst filled and slightly more on the punk side. This seemingly threw off our audience but catalyzed our sound into the 90’s inspired, self proclaimed grunge-pop genre we originally aimed for. Following that we have released other music and if you listen to our discography there is an underlying stitch that connects our overall sound which is both familiar and new.

MSKING, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Our name MSKING, is pronounced “miss king”. We are a three-piece, grunge-pop band from Salt Lake City, Utah. We originally met in college, then soon after in 2019 we got together with similar music interests. Each of us have a unique musical background and it made sense to mesh it all into a genre of our own. Problems that we have had to overcome is finding our niche and target audience. At first it was difficult to establish ourselves because we inhabit a middle ground between the indie and hardcore extremes present in our scene. Due to the variety of our influences we have an ability to reach a wider span of people. Even though we call ourselves grunge-pop it came into fruition because of us not being able to fit into any particular genre.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
We agree that the best way to support artists is go to shows. If you like them, follow them. Support them by buying merchandise that they have, and tell other people about them. It is pretty simple to find a song, and immediately like it, love it or share it.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building a social media presence can be a little fickle at times only because it is easy to try to blend in the with competition and saturation of what people are interested in. Something we have discovered is to just be authentically yourself. It is easier to think you have to fit in but in reality when you build an audience through personality there is a more solid connection.
