We were lucky to catch up with Mortez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mortez thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Mortez is a glorious love story about two musicians finding each other in the wild City of Angels. Brett Daniels and Rachele Royale come together as a dynamic, dramatic duo, bringing a symphonic rock dream to life. Rachele comes from the pop world building her brand as a solo recording artist. Her debut album was produced by rock legend Mutt Lange- her songs have been featured on MTV, CMT, Hulu, SiriusXM and beyond. Brett has played on some of the biggest stages as a session player with Hollywood local legends. As a composer, Brett’s end game is to tour with a full orchestra with Mortez.
From Rachele and Brett: “We believe that the DNA of our band “Mortez” symbolizes resilience & strength in connection to both of our individual survivor stories. Rachele losing her mom to suicide along with many other hardships has been the back bone of her song writing. Brett pushing through alcohol and substance abuse via the Hollywood scene has been a vehicle to create music as a source of therapy and healing. Performing these songs is such a cathartic and restorative experience for both of us. We want our fans the “Mortezians” to know that they are not alone in their healing journeys. We encourage everyone to believe in the power of manifestation and believing in yourself. This project has given us so much hope and internal strength.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Rachele: I grew up in the Bay Area where my mother ran 3 dance studios “Dance Attack”. My childhood consisted of dance competition, singing, acting. However, music did not happen for me until later. Dance was a traumatic experience which led to songwriting (around 16 yrs old) .. Several Years ears later I moved to LA and signed with Q Prime for my debut album produced by Mutt Lange. There are many people/stories/experiences Before and After this milestone moment. Being a woman without parents or protection is something I, and many other artists are publicly talking about now. After “quitting” music many times, I finally met Brett. He was the first person to completely love me unconditionally which allowed me to start healing. Music is now starting to feel safe again. That is my hope for every artist- to feel safe and loved.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Rachele: I have a podcast and I feel that the world of podcasting has allowed so many artists come forward with the truth about the industry. I think educating the public and dismantling old systems is finally starting to happen. Song writers are still not getting paid what they’re legally entitled to, and we are still at 5% total women in music ! We have a long way to go but our voices have platforms now to be heard.
Brett and Rachele: The best way to support an artist is to stream their music, buy their merch, go to their shows, subscribe to their patreon, share their music with friends etc. Posting and tagging on social media is always a blessing too. Artists need love and support.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is having your message heard and understood. When a song can uplift someone’s soul or change their internal spirit, it is the biggest gift to receive as an artist. Seeing the audience sing the words, tagging us in a photo wearing our merch, just knowing that our music is giving people inspiration or healing is the whole point. We are so grateful for all of it.
