Morgan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My main mission for Olivia’s Nectar is for women especially women of color to love and embrace their natural hair, without thinking that the natural state of their hair always needs to be hidden, in order for their hair to be considered the most beautiful. I want to show the world that our curls are perfect how they are, and should be worn freely without doubt. It is very important to me that I inspire women to fall back in love with their curls. My main goal is to have everyone who uses Olivia’s Nectar feel like royalty.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
Absolutely, my name is Morgan Kelly, and I started my business in 2019. It all started because of my daughter really, I noticed one day that her hair was falling out at an alarming rate, and the hair that she did have was thinning. It made me so sad because I have always dreamt of having a daughter, and being able to style her hair in many ways. So when this tragic event took place I immediately started to look for a solution. When I found out that nothing in stores was helping, it led me to research and create my own hair products that could reverse her hair loss condition. I started to research natural herbs, vitamins, oils, etc that promote hair growth on a deeper level. After a lot of trial and error I created an oil that did indeed grow my daughters hair back, and it made me want to share this gift with others that might be going through the same situation. That is how my company Olivia’s Nectar was born, we named it after her , and fast forward to 2022, we now have 3 difference product collections that all serve a different hair need. I am most proud to say that the other people who have tried my products are having the same results, and they love it. Social Media has been a great help with spreading the word about my company, and I can not wait until we are available on shelves everywhere.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Funding my business has been the hardest part of the journey. I first started by using my own money from the job that I had at the time, but that started to chip away at my funds that were intended for other needs. I then began signing up for grants because I did not want to take out a loan, but once those did not come through then I picked up another side job by delivering food with door dash, and now with every cent that I make with the business, I invest it right back into the business in order to keep growing.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for me has really been word of mouth. My customers love the products so much they tell others about it, and I am so grateful that they do because word of mouth travels faster than ads these days. I think it really shows me to always stay true to putting the best ingredients into my products, and to show love. back to my customers and supporters because they are putting themselves, and their word out on the line for me, and it is my duty to prove to the new supporters why they were recommended to me.
