We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Monica Guerrero. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Monica below.
Monica, appreciate you joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
I’ve had many bosses over the course of my career, and several of them have left a meaningful impact on both my professional path and my life. I’m genuinely grateful for the mentors who invested their time and energy in me—especially those who believed in me, told me they believed in me, and gave me the confidence I needed to do my job well and succeed.
One boss stands out more than any other: Andy. He was only my boss for about two years, but I will never forget the way he led in a corporate setting and the level of respect he commanded from his team. He made us want to work for him. The last thing any of us wanted to do was disappoint him—not out of fear, but out of respect.
He led during a time when a Fortune 500 company’s legal department was under intense scrutiny and internal turmoil. I had never been so anxious walking into a job. But under his leadership—shaped in part by his service in the Navy, and more importantly by simply being a good human being—the work felt manageable. The stress didn’t disappear, but it never felt overwhelming.
Without question, he had his team’s back, even in the face of significant corporate pressure from above. When you know your boss is looking out for you and your best interests—whether you’re in the room or not—you’re able to do your best work without fear. His guidance was steady and unwavering. He was willing to “die on that hill” for his team, and in return, we were willing to stand on that hill with him.
When he left the company after 25 years of service, I left shortly after. I never looked back.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m an attorney based in San Antonio, Texas, and my work sits at the intersection of criminal defense, advocacy, and real-world problem solving. I didn’t take a straight line to this work. Before focusing on criminal defense, I spent years working in law firms, in-house on complex, high-stakes matters, and in public-interest spaces where the work was deeply personal and the consequences were real. All of those experiences shaped how I practice today.
What ultimately pulled me into criminal defense was the people. I saw how easily someone’s life can be turned upside down by a single accusation, often before they’ve had a real chance to be heard. I also saw how intimidating the legal system can feel if you don’t have someone in your corner who is willing to push back, ask hard questions, and actually explain what’s happening. That’s the role I take seriously every day. My job is to protect my clients’ rights, guide them through a stressful and unfamiliar process, and fight for the best possible outcome while never losing sight of the human being involved.
Through my work at Texas Defenders, I represent individuals facing criminal charges in San Antonio and surrounding areas. I appear in court regularly, handle cases from intake through resolution, and work closely with clients so they understand their options and feel empowered to make informed decisions.
What I think sets me apart is how personal I keep the work. I don’t believe in treating clients like case numbers or problems to be managed. I believe in clear communication, honesty, and preparation.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me at some of the hardest moments of their lives. Whether that leads to dismissals, reduced charges, or simply helping someone feel heard and supported during a difficult chapter, that trust is never something I take lightly. I’m also proud of the way I’m building my practice and my personal brand. Transparency, education, and accessibility matter to me, and I try to reflect that both in my legal work and in how I show up online and in my community.
If there’s one thing I want people to know about me and my work, it’s this: I take this responsibility seriously. I care about outcomes, but I care just as much about how my clients are treated along the way. That mindset guides everything I do.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
One book that truly changed the trajectory of my life is You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero. I read it about a decade ago, at a time when I was a young thirty-something in a corporate legal environment just trying to hang on and do what I thought I was supposed to do.
That book helped me realize that work is not the sole measure of success, and that it’s okay to want more out of life than stability, titles, or checking the right boxes. It challenged a lot of the fear-based thinking I had around risk, fulfillment, and what it meant to bet on myself. More than anything, it gave me permission to question whether the path I was on actually fit who I was becoming.
Looking back, I genuinely believe it planted the seed that led me to leave a civil litigation law job that felt safe but was dreadful and uninspiring. It inspired me to travel more, explore new interests, and eventually move into work that feels aligned with my values. Today, I get to use my law degree in a way that feels purposeful. I’m advocating for people, pushing for fairness, and doing work that doesn’t feel like “work” in the traditional sense. That shift in mindset was foundational to how I think about leadership, entrepreneurship, and building a life and career that actually feel like mine.

Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots in my life happened in my thirties, when I realized I was burned out from the traditional legal grind. I was working long hours, often 9 a.m. to well past 9 p.m., and while the work was respectable, I was exhausted and uninspired. I knew I couldn’t keep going like that, and I also knew that if I didn’t try something different then, I might never do it.
That’s when I took a leap into real estate. At the time, it felt like a total departure from law, but it ended up being one of the smartest moves I’ve ever made. I built a successful real estate career in Austin during a booming market, and I learned firsthand what it means to build a business from the ground up. I wasn’t just selling homes. I was marketing myself, developing a brand, following up relentlessly, and learning how to generate and convert leads through direct mail, social media, and relationship-building.
Real estate also sharpened my negotiation skills in a way nothing else could have. I was on the front lines every day negotiating everything from multi-million-dollar transactions down to the smallest details, like whether a seller would replace a water heater or how much a contractor should be paid to repaint a house. You learn quickly how to read people, manage expectations, stay calm under pressure, and advocate fiercely while still getting deals across the finish line. Those skills translate directly into every part of my professional life.
When the real estate market eventually slowed, it gave me the space to pause again and reassess. Instead of seeing that slowdown as a setback, I treated it as an opportunity. I asked myself where I wanted my career to go next and what kind of work would actually feel meaningful long-term. That reflection led me back to the law, but this time with clarity. I focused on an area I was genuinely passionate about and where I could use every skill I had picked up along the way.
That pivot, and the ones that followed, taught me that careers don’t have to be linear to be successful. Each chapter built on the last. The risk I took stepping away from the traditional path didn’t set me back. It gave me the confidence, perspective, and skill set I rely on today.
