We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mollie Peiren. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mollie below.
Mollie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
I used to work in a production environment and because I was only in one or two of the locations in the production process, I didn’t always know or understand how what I was doing affected the next person or more down the process from me. When I was moved to different areas in the production process, I would learn how I could make things easier or better for the person following me. I remember thinking as I learned another step, “Wow, if I had taken just a little longer to do one extra step, the next person’s job would have been that much better.” It wasn’t that the step had to be taken for the job to be done correctly, but it was something that just made life for everyone down the line that much nicer.
What did this teach me? I need to think about what I am doing now and how it affects another person, is there something that I can do that will benefit them? It may be something small and easy not to do, but yet easy to do as well-so why not do it?
Mollie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an online fitness trainer and functional nutrition coach. I also am a Bowenwork practitioner. I was in an accident at a very young age, being thrown from a horse around the age of 3 or 4. It took my parents years to find someone who could help me, it was a chiropractor. Within 6 months he had me back to being a normal kid. I was in 3rd grade by then. Because of that experience I have always been very conscious of my back, taking care of it and keeping active. My father got me into running and swimming. Running keeps me calm and helps me to think clearly.
About 30 years ago, I started training others in a non-for-profit setting. I was certified as a Personal Trainer and then through the years acquired various other certifications-Group Fitness, Functional Nutrition Coach, Nutrition Coach, Pilates-Mat to name a few.
My mother developed Parkinson’s in her early 50’s. I found that Bowenwork (a body therapy developed in Australia) was very helpful with this particular condition. I took all the classes to be certified so that I could help my mother until she passed away in 2020. This therapy was life changing for me and love using it to help others feel and move better.
When covid started, I needed to move my fitness to online. It has worked out so well that this is where I have remained. It allows me to connect with my clients all over the world.
One of my best moments was when a man (I hadn’t met him previously) came up to me and thanked me for helping his wife. She had started attending my classes and because of them her back and health were improving and had made a huge difference in what she was able to do. He was so grateful. This is why I love what I do. When I can have a person tell me that they are feeling and moving better, it makes it all worthwhile.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2020 I had a major life change. I had trained physical fitness basically as a hobby for over 20 years and now I needed to make it my source of income. This was a huge change, I wondered if I would be able to keep loving it now that it was my job. Starting to charge for what I had done for free was a major mindset adjustment. I still work on that, but I have good friends who have helped me see that it’s important to charge otherwise it is just an expensive hobby.
Learning the in’s and out’s of a business and what people want and will pay for is a never ending process.
Thankfully I have had good friends to support me mentally and emotionally and have been great for spreading the word to help me find more clients. It just keeps growing.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The book, The Slight Edge is a very good book. It helped me to build on my experience of doing the little things daily, the impact is huge down the road. But if I don’t do those little things, nothing will change for me and most likely will go down hill.
