We were lucky to catch up with Miyan Benita recently and have shared our conversation below.
Miyan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents impacted my life and career by instilling a deep love and desire to travel in my free spirit soul from a young age. They also led the way by showing me how to appreciate cultures and new experiences firsthand. When I was in the 4th grade, my mom, dad, younger brother, and sister moved across the world to Israel where I was immersed in a Hebrew-speaking elementary school for a few years, forced to make new friends and learn the language. By realizing how large the world really is and piquing my interest to study the language and culture, I grew to be a better person. We moved homes and countries quite a few times in my childhood and teen years and each time (as challenging as it was then) the experience opened my eyes to a new place, new people, and a new way to see things. I truly believe my parents gave me the greatest gift by always encouraging me to travel, live in new places, and stay curious and humble. After I graduated college, my younger sister and I moved back to Israel to complete a 6-month immersive program on a kibbutz…and I ended up staying for four years. Living abroad taught me so much about myself and I am thankful to have so much family and so many friends across the world. A quote my mom would say to me when I was younger is “You’re never lost, you’re always somewhere” and this has stuck with me until today when I sometimes feel a little overwhelmed when traveling and just life in general. This outlook on life and way of thinking has also helped me in my career as a freelance writer and travel blogger. I truly enjoy expressing myself through writing and sharing stories of my travels in hopes to connect with others and shed light on the places I explore!

Miyan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been a blogger since 2007! I started my first blog when I traveled abroad to study Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico while attending university at Texas State. I wanted a way for my friends and family back home to read about my cultural experience. I fell in love with creative writing and photography and really enjoyed having a digital creative outlet. I then started another blog in 2008 when I moved to Israel to study Hebrew and have been blogging ever since. My blog evolved from an online journal for just my friends and family to read to a platform for me to share my travel tips, shoppable style, and content related to motherhood once I had my two sons. With my passion for content creation and my digital marketing corporate experience, I have shifted my focus to SEO writing for various clients as a freelancer. I provide value to my clients with my upbeat, positive attitude and knack for helping them reach their business goals quickly. My expertise is in creative writing, product descriptions, and SEO articles and I’m proud to be flexible and nimble in that I can easily understand and adapt to my client’s needs and exceed their expectations with my work.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I discovered the freelancer platform Upwork when I was pivoting from my corporate role from At Home stores to become a full-time mom and freelance writer and it’s been the best source of new clients for me. It’s easy to reach out and pitch yourself to clients in various industries as well as have clients reach out to me directly. The “interview” process is simple and straightforward and it’s really easy to get started on a project or contract, which I love. What I especially love is the variety of clients that you might not have exposure to otherwise, ranging from large corporations to small business owners.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is the ability to express and challenge myself while doing what I love. For me, it’s really fulfilling to create with my hands and produce a physical or digital product including online articles, photos, a craft project, and even handmade jewelry. But to clarify, it’s about the experience and process just as much as the outcome!
