We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mish Fultz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mish thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I went from working at a local salon to renting a suite at Sola quickly. I realized I couldn’t grow anymore at the salon I was in. So then to escalate to a full on salon with other people a year and 9 months after opening up my studio was just so crazy. It honestly still feels like a dream sometimes. Learning who’s really there for me throughout this journey was also an emotional awakening. You lose a lot of people you out grow; but you also meet so many more people who choose to grow with you. Im working endlessly to make myself and my family proud of my salon and my choices! Saying all of that, I love every minute of it. Having such an incredible team has made this chapter all that more empowering!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I went to school a year after I had my son. We found out we were having a baby at 17 so I worked a 9-5 for the year. We moved back to Colorado and I started beauty school. I started at a local salon and learned so many things. I stayed there for four years until an opportunity arose to run my own studio so I took it. Then my business partner found a place located downtown and I networked with a few local stylists and have a solid team now! They are so hard working, constantly educating, constantly advertising & hustling! We are so amazed by the amount of support in our community! We like to treat our clients with free deep conditioning treatments or some money off of product! Whatever we can to show our appreciation!

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Honesty is key. No matter how uncomfortable the situation is, being honest is what’s going to help you sleep at night. Knowing I for sure let my team know I appreciate how hard they work and do things when I can to show my appreciation! Also having that balance of friendship/coworkers is super important to maintaining healthy relationships. Sometimes there’s learning curves but as long as there’s communication, anything can be worked through. I don’t expect my team to do anything I wouldn’t do, cleaning or maintaining the shop wise. It’s amazing having a team that everyone loves cleaning and organizing lol it makes everything run so smoothly.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth is an amazing advertising method for the beauty industry! I have tried radio method and gained a couple clients but not as much as word of mouth. Social media is a great tool to use as well! Keeping up with it is where it gets a little overwhelming at times. But once you sit down and spend like ten minutes making future posts for the next couple days.
