Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ming’feng Li. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ming’feng thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
In my career as a cinematographer and content producer, I learned that traditional networking and word-of-mouth were not enough to get steady work. So, I made social media my main marketing tool, using platforms like Instagram and TikTok to share my work and connect with clients. By posting behind-the-scenes videos and reaching out to brands, I was able to attract more projects from companies like TikTok, CapCut, and Pinduoduo. This helped me grow my business and become a trusted cinematographer for both commercial and independent projects.
Keeping a steady cash flow has also been very important for my career. Since film work comes in projects and not regular paychecks, I found ways to manage my money better. I worked with different clients, saved money for emergencies, and made sure to get fair payments. I also balanced commercial work with personal projects so I could stay creative while keeping a stable income. This financial planning has helped me invest in better equipment and take on bigger projects.
Finally, I learned that having a backup plan is key to avoiding problems on set. I always prepare extra locations, have backup crew members, and keep alternative options ready. For example, when a filming location was suddenly unavailable, I quickly switched to another site I had already planned for, saving time and money. Being ready for unexpected changes helps keep projects on schedule and keeps clients happy. By staying flexible and prepared, I have been able to keep my career moving forward successfully.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a cinematographer and content producer passionate about visual storytelling. My journey began at the ArtCenter College of Design, where I studied film and gained hands-on experience working on sets. It was during this time that I discovered my love for lighting and cinematography, shaping my approach to creating compelling visuals.
Today, I specialize in cinematography, lighting design, and production for commercials, short films, and documentaries. Through my brand, Foto Elements Media, I have collaborated with global brands like TikTok, CapCut, and Pinduoduo, helping them craft engaging visual content. Additionally, I have worked on over 20 overseas short dramas, ensuring each project maintains high production value and seamless execution.
My expertise includes on-set lighting, cinematography, and production management, translating a director’s vision into striking visuals. With a keen eye for detail and a commitment to storytelling, I strive to create visually powerful and emotionally resonant work that elevates every project.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
One of the most important lessons I have learned is the need to understand the financial side of running a brand. At first, I focused only on improving my cinematography skills, but I wish I had learned more about cash flow, budgeting, and pricing my services. As a filmmaker and business owner, financial stability is just as important as creativity.
Running Foto Elements Media, I quickly saw that steady cash flow is key to growing my brand. Learning how to negotiate contracts, set fair prices, and manage expenses has helped me take on bigger projects without money problems. Now, I make sure to work with different clients, save for the future, and plan for slow periods to keep my business strong.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by a deep and ongoing desire to not only become a better person but also to express my unique perspective through the content I create. For me, cinematography goes beyond just being a job; it’s a powerful medium through which I can capture emotions, tell meaningful stories, and share perspectives that connect with people on a personal level. The beauty of visual storytelling lies in its ability to communicate complex emotions and ideas without words, and that’s what I strive for in every project I take on.
Each project is an opportunity for me to grow both as an artist and as a person. The challenges, creative decisions, and collaboration that come with each new venture push me to explore new ways of seeing and interpreting the world around me. Whether I’m working on a commercial, short film, or documentary, I am constantly learning and evolving my craft. My goal is always to create visuals that inspire, move, and evoke a powerful emotional response from the audience. I want my work to leave a lasting impact—to make people think, feel, or see the world in a new light.
At the core of everything I do is a belief that storytelling has the power to shape perspectives and spark change. Whether through capturing intimate moments or grand cinematic sequences, my mission is to bring a sense of authenticity and depth to every frame.
