Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Milli Oshyun. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Milli, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I have ever worked on is my recently released first full-length album, [Based From Sonny].
I initially started my musical journey with the goal of becoming a K-pop composer. As I continued to learn and produce, I was exposed to a vast array of music. Since K-pop is a genre that encompasses everything from R&B and Hip-Hop to various EDM styles like House and Dubstep, I naturally had to experiment with and master multiple genres. Fortunately, I’ve had the opportunity to work as a producer within major labels like YG Entertainment and participate in tracks for K-pop idols such as (G)I-DLE. While every collaboration was a valuable experience, this recent solo album remains the most significant milestone for me.
Through years of working across different styles, I developed a knack for creating “easy-listening” and trendy K-pop music, but my personal musical identity became increasingly distinct. My ultimate role model—the artist who made me think, “If I become an artist, I want to create music like this”—is Skrillex (Sonny Moore). When I produce K-pop, I often have to restrain my personal subjectivity to meet commercial needs. However, this album was a space where I could fully express my vision without any outside interference or compromise. I put my heart into every single detail, ensuring that I communicated everything I wanted to say through my music.
The album consists of 11 tracks that progress like a DJ’s mix set. It starts with “Take Control” at 127 BPM and concludes with “IS IT LATE NOW? (Feat. Rredrain)” at 158 BPM, with the tempo gradually increasing throughout. I curated a diverse sonic journey by blending genres I’ve always wanted to explore deeply, such as Bass House, Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Hybrid Trap, and Future Bass.
Furthermore, as a Korean artist, I wanted to experiment with blending Korean traditional music with EDM. In tracks 8 and 9, “NAMSAENAH” and “ONHEYA,” I explored this fusion, pushing the boundaries of the genre.
As the title suggests, the album is literally [Based From Sonny]. It is a tribute to the artist I have admired throughout my career. As a dedicated fan, I was inspired by how Skrillex incorporates various cultural elements and fresh, groundbreaking ideas into his tracks. I channeled that inspiration into my own ideas and even included homages by using similar musical elements in certain songs.
In collaborations with other artists or K-pop projects, I often have to dial back my own creative perspective. However, this project allowed me to melt my entire identity into the sound. By capturing the sounds I pursue without compromise, expressing respect for my idol, and completing such a complex production, I feel I have grown immensely compared to who I was in the past. That is why this album is the most meaningful project of my life.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Hello, I am Milli Oshyun, a music producer and artist based in Seoul.
My journey into the music industry began with a deep passion for K-pop composition. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with major labels like YG Entertainment and collaborating with top-tier K-pop groups such as (G)I-DLE. These experiences allowed me to master the art of creating polished, commercial hits, but they also fueled my desire to carve out my own unique sonic identity.
What sets me apart from others is my versatility—my ability to digest and execute any genre or sound, regardless of its complexity. Every artist has a different working style, and my greatest strength lies in my flexibility: I can seamlessly adapt to an artist’s specific needs, or if they prefer to lean into my signature style, I can deliver a powerful, high-impact sound that defines my artistic subjectivity.
As a composer with a solid foundation in K-pop, I am confident in delivering results that satisfy any collaborator across a wide spectrum of genres, including R&B, Hip-Hop, and various EDM styles (House, Future Bass, Dubstep, and more).
Just as my role model Skrillex constantly brings fresh, evolving sounds to every new release, I strive for the same artistic evolution. While my recent album, [Based From Sonny], was a deep dive into Bass music for those who love that specific energy, my next project will likely return with a more melodic and polished sound that appeals to a broader audience. Whether it’s through my own upcoming albums or through the music of other artists I collaborate with, I look forward to showcasing the next chapter of my sound.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Just as I found my musical direction by watching my role models, my ultimate goal is to become an artist who inspires the next generation. I want my creative journey to serve as a catalyst for others to push their limits and experiment with their own sounds. My mission is to keep evolving and producing music that sparks creativity and courage in fellow artists and fans alike.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the most defining moments of resilience in my journey was transitioning from the security of being a major label producer to discovering my own voice as an independent artist.
During my time at YG Entertainment, I learned the mechanics of creating massive hits, but I also faced a period of creative internal conflict. I felt the pressure of producing commercial success, which at times made me feel like I was losing sight of my own musical identity. Instead of succumbing to that burnout or settling for a comfortable but unfulfilling path, I chose to channel that tension into a project that was entirely mine.
Building my first full-length album, [BASED FROM SONNY], was my way of bouncing back. It wasn’t easy to balance professional demands with the grueling process of composing, arranging, and self-producing 11 tracks that pushed genre boundaries. There were countless moments of self-doubt, but I remained steadfast in my vision of blending K-pop sensibilities with aggressive Bass music and traditional Korean elements. Completing this album proved to me that resilience isn’t just about surviving tough times—it’s about the courage to stay true to your artistic core even when the easier path is to conform.
In the end, perhaps the most important thing is to never lose sight of what you truly want to create and to keep pushing forward with what you believe in, don’t you think?
