We were lucky to catch up with Mikey Medina recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mikey , appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
My favorite part of the business side is wearing my uniform–it makes me feel like a superhero. So yes, I am very happy and satisfied with my role as a business owner. Selecting the design and color of one’s uniform is harder than you think, it’s a representation of who I am and what we do as a company. If I had a regular job, the responsibility of a company and its employees wouldn’t be mine. As the owner, I hope to create a positive brand. The value of a uniform is underrated yet so powerful. Society looks at the logo and its color. The key is to create a positive long lasting emotional connection with service and its results.
I have had a job where I’m just an employee, and I’ve used that experience to learn and create my own structure. Understanding how big companies work and their business model has helped me obtain intel on how to operate on a large scale. I have worked in different fields such as hospitality, retail, and medicine. I made it a priority to work for others in order to improve my adaptability and knowledge. Being an employee also taught me that my job is important and necessary, for my employer and our national economy.
The hardest job I had, but most rewarding, was being a server and a bartender. Handling hot food at a fast pace while holding on to a conversation and then remembering someone’s request or order, followed by having to craft a few cocktails, remembering the ingredients for cocktails while having guests waving at me– it’s a lot to handle! Customer service and hospitality is very demanding and the money you make is reflected by how well you handle stressful situations and the ability to stay focused. After being part of that industry, I determined that I was already being my own boss. If I didn’t take the order right, check on the food, deliver the food, craft the cocktails, clean the table and collect payment, then I wasn’t going to get my tip. The money I was receiving was all up to me, no one else. Yes there are other factors that could make the customer experience a negative one, but once you understand that even as an employee you create your professional path, then you will create your own business model for whatever company or job you have, resulting in success.

Mikey , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello my name is Mikey Medina and I own a painting company that also expands its servicing for contracting other needs to build and renovate residentially and commercially. I started working with my father at the age of 12 during summer, my mother believed I needed to start at a young age about responsibilities and money management. The hardest thing about this service/ job is the physical labor. You need to have resistance for long hour shifts and get acclimated quickly to the weather and risk of climbing high to complete the service needed such as painting, siding, and roofing.
Within our company we allowed our clients to get access to multiple services for their home repairs, remodels or new projects. They feel more secure knowing that one person will be in charge of projects that require more than one skill and man labor. For a client it is not just about the job getting done correctly is also about the time frame and financial responsibility. Helping our clients stay on track and on budget is essential to continue with a professional service. We build long lasting memories and share responsibility with the other service provided we recommend or work with.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is a form of communication and connecting by allowing the audience to get oriented or informed. What I do is to continue orienting my followers or clients on how we expand or prepare in order to be professionals. Branding in the form of uniforms, business cards/ advertising like yard signs, tools of other service providers within the same industry or work field. Once you hire a service to provide the needs or essentials to start a business, you want people to know that you have the access and the intention of expanding. Let your audience know who and how they help you, give the public access to success, in other words you created publicity for other business owners by promoting your own. That’s the result of networking.
