We were lucky to catch up with Mike Vahdat recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mike, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Starting Ambiance Atlanta wasn’t something I planned in a traditional sense. It was more like a natural progression—a response to the experiences and lessons I had accumulated over the years.
I’d been in the corporate world for a while, working in engineering and manufacturing, and I’d always been fascinated by the process of building things, whether it was factories or machinery. But when my first daughter was born, everything changed. The travel, the long hours—suddenly they didn’t feel like they aligned with what I wanted my life to be. Being there for her, being present, became my top priority.
At the time, I had already gained valuable experience in construction during my time at Georgia Tech and after, working on residential and commercial projects. I realized that I could combine my passion for creating physical spaces with the flexibility I needed in my personal life. The idea of starting my own construction company came to me almost organically.
But it wasn’t just about building houses—it was about building something more meaningful. I wanted to create a company that focused on design-build solutions, where we weren’t just constructing structures but truly bringing people’s visions to life. I knew there was a market in Atlanta for a design-oriented firm that could blend modern construction techniques with custom design solutions.
I looked at the industry and saw a gap: there were companies that could build houses, and then there were architects or designers who could conceptualize incredible spaces—but not many firms that truly brought both together in a seamless way. I believed Ambiance Atlanta could fill that void. Our approach would be unique in that we wouldn’t just focus on the technical side of construction—we would integrate thoughtful design into every aspect of the process. We’d focus on the client experience, truly listening to their needs, and helping them create spaces that reflected their aspirations and lifestyles.
What excited me the most was the idea of creating something that wasn’t just a job or a project but a lasting relationship. We’re not just building homes or offices; we’re building trust. The joy and satisfaction of knowing that you’ve helped someone transform their vision into a reality—that’s what got me most excited. And I was confident it would work because I had seen firsthand, in my own career, the impact that thoughtful design and quality construction could have. People want a space that speaks to them, and that’s something I could offer.
Of course, it wasn’t an easy leap. Starting a business requires a huge leap of faith. But I knew that with my background, experience, and a clear understanding of the market, it was a risk worth taking. And here we are today—growing, thriving, and doing exactly what I set out to do.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Mike Vahdat, founder of Ambiance Atlanta, a design-build company that specializes in creating tailored, functional spaces for residential and commercial clients. My journey into this industry is a bit unconventional, but it’s been shaped by my background in mechanical engineering, a passion for problem-solving, and my love for construction.
I was born in Iran and moved to the U.S. at the age of 18, settling in Cobb County, Georgia. After earning both my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech, I began my professional career in heavy machinery manufacturing. But as life often does, it took me on a different path. When my first daughter was born, I realized that the demanding travel and hours of a global executive didn’t align with the personal life I wanted. Around the same time, I had been gaining valuable experience working on residential and commercial construction projects, and I realized that construction was where my true passion lay.
In 1999, I took the leap into entrepreneurship by starting my first construction company, focusing on building starter homes. Over the years, I grew and refined my skills in residential and commercial construction. Today, Ambiance Atlanta is known for providing a full suite of design-build services, specializing in custom homes, luxury renovations, and commercial projects. We combine architecture, design, and construction under one roof, ensuring a seamless, collaborative process for our clients.
What sets Ambiance Atlanta apart is our approach. We don’t just build spaces—we craft environments that are thoughtfully designed to reflect the unique lifestyles and needs of our clients. We pride ourselves on listening deeply to our clients, understanding their vision, and then using our expertise to turn that vision into a reality. Whether it’s a custom home that reflects a client’s personality or a commercial space that fosters creativity and productivity, we strive to create a balance between beauty, function, and sustainability.
We also take great pride in using modern construction techniques and eco-friendly materials whenever possible. We’re not just building for today; we’re thinking about the future—how spaces can evolve, how they can be energy-efficient, and how they can contribute to a sustainable future.
At Ambiance Atlanta, we are problem-solvers. We help our clients navigate the complexities of construction, from initial design to final walk-through. Whether it’s overcoming design challenges, working within a specific budget, or managing project timelines, we are there every step of the way to ensure that the end result is not just satisfactory but exceptional.
What I’m most proud of is the lasting relationships we’ve built over the years. Many of our clients come back to us for multiple projects, and others refer us to their friends and family, which is the highest compliment we can receive. It’s not just about completing a project; it’s about creating a partnership that continues beyond the final handshake.
I want potential clients to know that Ambiance Atlanta is not just another construction company. We are a team of passionate, creative, and detail-oriented professionals who care deeply about every project we take on. We understand that the spaces we create are an extension of the people who live and work in them, and we approach each project with that understanding at the forefront. Our clients’ satisfaction isn’t just a goal; it’s a measure of our success.

Have you ever had to pivot?
There have been several moments in my career where I’ve had to pivot, but perhaps the most significant was when I made the decision to leave a successful corporate career to pursue my passion for construction and start my own business.
At the time, I was a Vice President and Engineering Manager for a global manufacturing company. I had worked hard to climb the corporate ladder, managing large-scale projects and leading teams across multiple countries. It was a great job, and on paper, I had it all—prestige, stability, and the promise of even greater success ahead. But when my first daughter was born, everything changed for me.
I began to realize that the hours I was putting in, the constant travel, and the sacrifices I was making in my personal life weren’t sustainable. I wanted to be there for my daughter, to experience her milestones and be an active part of her life. At the same time, I was reflecting on what truly brought me joy—creating spaces, designing, and building. I had always been fascinated by construction, and during my time at Georgia Tech, I had worked on a number of construction projects. So, the seed for starting my own business was already planted, but it wasn’t until my daughter’s birth that I realized how important it was for me to make a change.
Making the pivot from a high-level corporate role to starting my own construction company was not an easy decision. There were so many factors to consider—financial stability, the risks of starting something from scratch, and the uncertainty of how the market would respond. But ultimately, it was the pull of wanting to have more control over my time and the chance to build something truly meaningful that motivated me to make the leap.
That decision to pivot led me to start my first construction company in 1999. I began by focusing on starter homes and properties for first-time buyers. Over time, I transitioned into larger projects, eventually founding Ambiance Atlanta in 2008, which has grown into a premier design-build firm in the Atlanta area.
Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The transition wasn’t easy—I had to learn everything from scratch, navigate the ups and downs of the market, and develop a completely new skill set. But the satisfaction of being able to balance my career with my personal life, and the joy of building something that truly matters, made every challenge worth it.
That pivot wasn’t just about changing careers—it was about aligning my work with my values and my vision for the future. And it’s a reminder to me that sometimes, the biggest risks can lead to the greatest rewards.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There have been several moments in my journey where resilience played a crucial role, but one that stands out is the way I managed to navigate the economic downturns, especially the 2008 financial crisis, while keeping Ambiance Atlanta afloat and growing.
At that time, the construction industry was hit hard. Clients were hesitant to commit to new projects, financing was more difficult to secure, and many construction companies were closing their doors. For a new company like ours, it was a particularly difficult moment. On top of that, I had just transitioned Ambiance Atlanta into a more design-focused company, moving from building starter homes to offering high-end custom homes and remodels. The timing couldn’t have been worse.
But this is where resilience came into play. Instead of giving in to the uncertainty, I focused on adapting. I took a step back and assessed what was working, what wasn’t, and where the opportunities lay. The first thing I did was refine our approach to project management—becoming even more strategic with budgets and timelines to ensure we could deliver projects without compromise, even in a tighter financial environment. We leaned into design innovation, emphasizing cost-effective yet creative solutions that allowed us to stand out in a competitive market.
I also put an enormous amount of energy into client relationships. Many people were still uncertain about investing in construction, so I focused on building trust. I made sure that every client felt heard, that they understood how we could work together to create something extraordinary within their budget. This emphasis on communication, transparency, and trust is what helped us build a loyal client base that carried us through the tough years.
On a personal level, it was incredibly challenging. Balancing the stress of keeping a business afloat while being there for my family was no small feat. But I always kept the bigger picture in mind: the resilience I showed was not just about surviving the moment—it was about setting an example for my daughters that no matter how difficult life gets, you can always find a way through if you keep going and stay focused on your goals.
Looking back, that period taught me invaluable lessons. It taught me the importance of adaptability, of staying calm in the face of uncertainty, and of relying on the strength of the team and relationships I had built. Ambiance Atlanta not only survived that crisis but came out stronger, more diversified, and better equipped for the future.
Resilience, for me, isn’t just about enduring hardship—it’s about growth through adversity. That experience taught me that even when things seem insurmountable, there’s always a way forward if you stay focused, keep your integrity, and lean into the strengths you have.
